Default RIP James Arness ...Marshall Matt Dillon

James Arness of 'Gunsmoke' fame dies at 88
    June 3, 2011, 12:09 PM EST
CBS spokesman Chris Ender says former "Gunsmoke" star James Arness has died at age 88.

Ender had no further details, but Arness' official website said the actor died Friday of natural causes.

Arness played U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon in the 1955-75 CBS Western series that ran on CBS from 1955 to 1975, becoming the longest-running dramatic series in network history until NBC's "Law & Order" tied.

The Minnesota native was 32 when friend John Wayne declined the lead role in "Gunsmoke" and recommended Arness instead.

Arness said he left home at age 18, hopping freight trains and ships. He was wounded in World War II, then went to Hollywood where he had parts in more than 20 films before going to "Gunsmoke."

He was the brother of Peter Graves, star of the TV series "Mission: Impossible."

survivor of the Bowling Green Massacre 9-3-2016 BGSU 10 OSU 77

She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.

My Dad's handle for the old CB radio days was "Gunsmoke" and my Mom was "Miss Kitty".

Oddly enough, we are distantly related to Arness on my Grandma Mitchell's side of the family.

RIP James aka Matt Dillon. You will be missed.

Indeed, Gunsmoke was a staple in my house growing up...seemed it was the first show I can remember talking about the next school day.

He wrote his fans a nice letter that was posted on his site today:

    http://www.jamesarness.com/greeting.html

    Hi friends,

I decided to write a letter to you for Janet to post on our website in the event I was no longer here.

I had a wonderful life and was blessed with some many loving people and great friends. The best part of my life was my family, especially my wife Janet. Many of you met her at Dodge City so you understand what a special person she is.

I wanted to take this time to thank all of you for the many years of being a fan of Gunsmoke, The Thing, How the West Was Won and all the other fun projects I was lucky enough to have been allowed to be a part of. I had the privilege of working with so many great actors over the years.

I was honored to have served in the army for my country. I was at Anzio during WWII and it makes you realize how very precious life is.

Thank you again for all the many letters, cards, emails and gifts we received from you over the years. You are and always have been truly appreciated.

    Sincerely,
    Jim Arness
I never missed an episode of Gunsmoke from 1968 to whenever it went off the air.

Wow, he manages to get a message out to his fans even after death, and Van Halen can't even get a message out to their fans while they're still alive.

I, too, used to watch "Gunsmoke" as a kid, but unfortunately I retained no real recollections from it.

    Rest in Peace, Mr. Arness
