Default Rock 'n Roll Hoochie Koo - Eruption?

Heard a version of Rock 'n Roll Hootchie Koo this weekend by Rick Derringer/Edgar Winter from a live Tokyo show circa 1973. It's a longer version of the song than normally played, and around the four minute mark, Rick tears off a solo that sounds remarkably like Eruption. Has this ever been discussed? Is Eruption really a RRHK rip off? Can't find any clips of the actual show/song, but the proof is on the disc I have. There are some clips of Derringer doing Van Halen type guitar solo's from recent years, but I imagine anything after 1978 by Rick will just be written off as him ripping off EVH.

This is a much more recent solo, but the one from 1973 sounded a hell of a lot more like Eruption, and like I said, anyone hearing Rick play this will just write it off as aping Eddie.

Wow. And if the '73 one is even closer.... double wow. Does the early one have tapping and divebombs too?

It's pretty close. If one didn't know better, they would think that Rick was attempting to play Eruption, but just not getting it right.

Really liked the VH version, thanks for posting it.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

The VH version is nothing like RD judging from the vids you posted. Similar yes but Ed always stated he got the idea for tapping from Jimmy Page on Heartbreaker doing hammer ons and pull offs and using your hand as the nut. Even if there is any validity to this, everyone steals from everyone in music so it wouldn't surprise me. Especially for the guitar.

I think they "sound" similar yes but it's nothing like Eruption on those vids anyway. More like noodling around with no structure. I'm sure we would have heard something by now from RD if he thought Ed had ripped him off.

47 explained he wasn't able to find a clip of the '73 - these were probably as close as he could get... I can definitely see where you're coming from, 47 - it's a shame the '73 isn't available. I suppose it just goes to show that everything in life is 'recycled' in some way or other!

'Til I hear him doing it in '73, I'm not biting. Seems like something he added later.

Remember that Derringer had to "imitate" Eddie as he played the solo on Weird Al's "Eat It."

My memory could be a bit off but I remember an early interview with Eddie (may have been his first or second interview with Guitar) where he talked about how the old guard of guitarists being asses to him. Mentioned both Derringer and Tom Scholtz specifically about how they would play Eruption (most likely the tapping part) during their featured solo spot the times when their bands shared a bill.

I don't know if he would have went off on Derringer if he had copied him.

The CD is called Edgar Winter and Rick Derringer - The Encore Collection - Extended Mixes

The version on this CD sounds a lot like the full You Tube version above, and as far a I can tell, it's from the early 70's... I'm still looking for info... none of this stuff has dates for the recordings on them for some reason.

    also...

I'd like to change one line in my original post, from Is Eruption really a RRHK rip off? to Was Eruption inspired by RRHK?, for some of our more sensitive readers who may not have seen this thread yet.

"Van Halen is definitely a ladies band, and I´ve got the Polaroids to prove it". - David Lee Roth

Whatever you call it, it’s pretty disappointing. Add this to the nearly identical version of Baluchitherium and a very similar Hot for Teacher made by that other dude who’s name I don’t remember and you certainly start to see a pattern.

It makes me think about Kool and the Gang’s “Celebration” and the riff from BOBW. From the first time I heard that track, I picked up on the similarity and I just always thought that Eddie was taking their concept and making a rocking version of it. I think Eddie denied any similarity between the songs in an interview. Once again, it’s pretty disappointing.

I believe that was Trevor Rabin, who went on to do a ton of work with Yes in the 80s\90s and then on to a film score career.
