Van Halen headlined day 2 of the US Festival. I was there, and although it definitely wasn't one of the band's better performances, I will never forget that day! Who else was there?

That was the day I graduated from high school in the middle of Indiana, so I definitely wasn't there. It's nice to know something that cool happened the day I graduated.

Me. They sucked. Especially Dave. The crowd knew it, too. Scorps blew them away earlier.

But yes, the day was difficult to forget, you are right.

The funny thing about that show is that for the longest time all I ever had were the 3 songs that MTV showed in some mini version of the concert (RWTD, PW, YRGM). I thought they were awesome. Plus I had a great audio interview with Dave just before he hit the stage. Maybe somebody knows what I'm talking about. It's not the one with Mark Goodman of MTV, it was a guy from Westwood One I believe.

Anyways, from the time I was 15 until just in the past several years I always thought it was the ultimate Van Halen show. But after you see shit like Romeo Delight and many others....um....no thanks. Incredible myth that the US Festival is VH's shining moment.

Having seen VH on every album-supporting tour with three exceptions - I and Balance - I think that Dave-era VH's best shows were prior to the Diver Down and 1984 tours and the US Fest. Sorry, but it was too sloppy and WAY too much non-singing. I'm under no illusions that Dave is one of the greatest rock singers (he is one of the greatest rock frontmen, hands down) but everything after FW seemed to be more about his on-stage schtick. That's how I see it.

Now, I wasn't there, but I was in California at the time and I remember that day, too. Even at my age and where I was, there was an electricity in the air about the US Festival. My buddy Dean and I were totally bummed that we weren't there. We sat in his room listening to VH all day and playing Atari. The MTV thing from US Fest was cool...so glad they showed it.

I know I put down VH's performance at US Fest in my previous post, but I still wish I would have been there. That was and is a legendary show.

Like Brett astutely noted, I think people tend to attribute more value to that show because of the pro shot footage more than anything else.

Being there...one would remember the muddied sound, the unintelligible lyrics and obviously wasted antics of Dave, and Ed was not on his A game by any means. Plus it was fucking hot, been standing there all day for the other acts, who by and large were all more tight than the closer, which is what we'd all been waiting for.

I can't stand rock festivals because of Us, and to a lesser yet still annoying degree, Monsters. Both headlined by VH. Both went awry thanks to stupid shit from different frontmen during the festival. But both had too many fucking people, and too much general admission. Tomfuckery.

Gimme my expensive reserved seat and a nice two hour gig cleanly executed any day.

Holy fuck.....I seriously haven't heard that clip in almost 30 years and as soon as the interview started I lip synced almost the entire thing. Even remember all of the background comments too. LOL.....I bet I listened to that thing a million times back then.

I still have that buried on a cassette somewhere but wouldn't know where to find it. So cool to hear that again....takes me right back!

They also outplayed them at Monsters in '88 at LA Coliseum, ironically enough.

    That's why a Scorps/VH co-bill will never happen.
