EDDIE VAN HALEN GIVES RARE INTERVIEW TO SMITHSONIAN MAGAZINE

    5/26/2011

Van Halen guitarist Eddie Van Halen gave a rare interview to Smithsonian magazine to talk about his "Frankenstein" guitar, a replica of which was donated to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History earlier this year. Van Halen told the magazine how the original axe was created, explaining, "The original 'Frankenstein' was a result of me tinkering and experimenting with different elements of electric guitars that I liked. I created an instrument that wasn't offered as an 'off the rack' guitar by any manufacturer at the time."

The reclusive guitarist admitted, however, that he doesn't take the "Frankenstein" on tour with him anymore, saying, "I retired it from regular use. It took so much abuse from endless touring and recording; I wanted to pay some respect to it and let it survive and not let it get destroyed completely . . . I still play it every now and then. It's priceless to me."

Van Halen also discussed his favorite collaboration in the interview, saying, "Michael Jackson's 'Beat It' is a standout for me . . . It was a lot of fun to do. It's crazy that something could take such a short amount of time and can grow into something beyond anything you could ever imagine."

The guitarist did not discuss the band's new album with singer David Lee Roth, which is said to be nearing completion, or its plans to tour behind the disc.

I'm surprised he didn't slip his flip-flops in there somewhere.

    Groundbreaking indeed.
Sammy did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.
Michael did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.

Q: who was the biggest douche that you have worked with?

A: Eddie Van Halen hands down he threatened all the stage hands that if we wernt all pushed to the side when he got off stage that he would "bash our faces in"

Now the new David-Lee-Roth-Van Halen album, “Tokyo Dome In Concert,” is available for purchase, and it’s super, super, super, super, super, super, crazy bad. - Doug Elfman

I guess we will have to wait for the next Golf magazine for that info. I suppose the Franki will be next to Archie Bunkers chair?

Nobody is shooting down the rumors of a new album... But it's strange how much he avoids taking about new music at all. I'm sure nobody in the VH camp expects great sales, but I think it could be big for Ed if this album gets good reviews. It could change his career. If it gets destroyed like VH III did he might not ever come out of a hole again.

Funny, the reviews for the first few VH albums overall weren't that great either. They were never darlings of the music establishment.

What happened to those guys that didn't give a shit what anyone thought and just played and released music to their paying fans? I miss those guys.

Is there any way to merge the 2 threads about this subject?

The other one is the Smithsonian guitar thingummywotsit.

    Cheers!
