Default Rockers - I'm in Ottawa soon, am I going to die of boredom?

OK, so I often over-generalise about the number of people in North America here, but I thought I'd throw out a request for info, as a soon-to-be-lost Brit.

I'm assuming I'm going to have a concert starved time when I land in Ottawa this September (I'm living there as a student until April, it forms a part of my degree course here in the UK).

First appearances aren't great. My friend who lives in Missisauga, near Toronto, tells me Canada doesn't really have a bar/club scene for rock bands that she's aware of (she's quite a big rock fan, too). Here in Britain any city has at least 3 or 4 places where a coupla times a week or more there's a half decent rock or metal band playing (I have brought enough tastes that I'm talking from Pink Floyed to say Mayhem, anything I can get my hands on really). There hasn't been a concert at the main stadium of the city (is there more than one?) since 2005. Blues or reggae is good too, but scenes for those seem to be less standard in cities so I'm not expecting much.

I could even handle a healthy jazz scene. ANYTHING.

These two places look like they could be interesting. And I can always head up to Toronto for any real big concerts as all the major tours swing through there (if the concerts were on a weekend). Any other tips appreciated!

Ottawa is a great city! The ByWard Market area is a cool place with lots of nightlife see http://www.byward-market.com/en/directory/nightlife.htm

Remember there are 2 University's in Ottawa. Carleton University and University of Ottawa plus Algonquin College. There is always a party going on somewhere in town. Lots of girls in town too. I read somewhere years ago that they out number men. It won't be hard getting a date!

    Barrymores is a rockin place!

If you need a new guitar or strings here is a good store; http://www.stevesmusic.com/index.php...age=map_ottawa

Oh and by the way your friend who lives in Missisauga doesn't know anything!!!Toronto has a big bar/club scene for rock bands http://www.nowtoronto.com/music/listings/

Too bad you'll be too late for Bluesfest (every July)..Satch is coming this year.
It's the Largest in Canada and 2nd largest in North America!
Not just blues either, plenty of rock acts.
    http://www.ottawabluesfest.ca
As a student you'll "live" on Elgin street or in the (Byward) Market.
Lots of music on and off campus.
Big Concerts do frequent Ottawa as well (Van Halen was supposed drop in on the 2nd leg of the last tour..before it ended abruptly...we hope they make in this time around!)
If not in Ottawa then Montreal (at a 2hr drive) or Toronto (at a 4hr drive) aren't too much of a stretch for must see shows.
Ottawa was rated 16th best place in the world by Forbes Magazine this year....No US cities cracked the top 20!
Being the Capital of Canada lets this city of just under 1 Million have more to do than many cities 5x it's population!

BTW You can listen to Ottawa's Best Rock station to get you in the mood! http://thebear.fm

Obviously huh? Who actually from Canada would say that "Canada doesn't have a club scene." The statement doesn't even make sense. East to West this country is over 4500 miles long and over 2500 miles North to South. The lack of knowledge and generalizations are mind blowing and hilarious.
You'll be fine in Ottawa, don't worry. And Google is your friend.

I will second this...as a person who spends a good amount of time partaking in the live music, club scene I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that even the smallest towns seem to have live music at least once a week. I guarantee you in Ottawa you can find live venues that will allow for live music any night of the week. And any style you are looking for on any particular night.

As noted earlier you won't miss any big shows either. If an act doesn't include Ottawa on their itinerary then odds are they will be in Montreal. There are the odd act that will hit Toronto and no other city in Canada but in those rare instances you are 4 hours down the road.

Summary...you will be more than fine!

Just thought of something...I haven't seen him around here in a while now but I am pretty sure Mario VH is from Ottawa. Send him a PM and see if you can get a hold of him. I know he will be more than willing to offer up some suggestions.

Second question - how late is public transport gonna run? I'm prolly gonna be a 25 minute bus ride from where I'll be studying (Uni of Ottawa, not the other one). I'm apparently going to have to purchase a bus pass, it's compulsory for all their students or something, so the cost doesn't matter.

And on a cost note, how expensive are cabs? Here in the UK I'm used to spending up to £15 (go to http://www.xe.com/ucc/, see what that equates to) on a taxi that takes 15 minutes....a 25 minute bus is probably a 15 minute car journey, same kinda cost or more/less?
