    Default the Wild Life remake

what up linkers...its been a while since ive posted but ive been lurking, of course. I am thinking of writing a treatment that would be a remake of the Wild Life and wanted to see what you guys thought of the idea. I know it will probably be a biased opinion but i figured if there was a group of people that would understand what i might try to do, it would be my VH family. thoughts please
WHOAOH! Hey you! Who said that? Baby how you been?

A Wild Life remake won't be marketable in today's day and age. It wasn't that big a movie to begin with, first of all, and secondly, 80's retreads won't fly in the movie biz these days currently. Much more notorious 80's teen flix have been discussed and shot down at the larger studios, including Ferris Bueller, Breakfast Club, Fast Times, and so on. Several 80's homages in recent years have bombed at the box office...most notably, Topher Grace's Take Me Home Tonight, I suppose, which was supposed to be the 80's equivalent of 'Dazed and Confused.' If you wanna write it for fun, great. If you wanna write a treatment so you can pitch it to an agency or studio...change genre.

What's up Big Daddy 14? Yeah, if you do it, make sure it's R rated and set in today's time. Good luck.

I dunno man. The real draws for me at that time to the flick were:

    - Eddie fucking Van Halen doing the score.
    - Seemed to be cut from the same cloth as the hugely popular Fast Times. The creators were definitely trying to strike while the iron was hot.

Problem was that it was not really that popular, got lukewarm reviews, and the plot was...well it didn't really have one. Universal hasn't even seen fit to release the fucker on DVD, yet you can go grab a hundred copies of the Land of the Lost remake right now from Target (WTF??). It relied on the same elements that carried Fast Times, but the characters and performances this time around weren't as memorable. We saw a lot of ourselves in Mark Ratner falling puppy-eyed in love with Stacy Hamilton over at Perry's Pizza, and all of us knew a stoner like Spicoli (some of us might've even been him at one time).

I guess my advise to you would be to make the characters one hell of a lot more real and relatable than the kids in TWL were. Give them some deep backgrounds and don't make them simple modern copies of themselves. There needs to be a plot this time, too. It takes a special set of characters to make you give a shit when all they are doing is being dopey teenagers. Superbad was the last thing I can remember to successfully pull this off, so that flick might be a nice jumping off point for you rather than using the original TWL as a template. The world would likely need to be updated to the times as well. Do kids still hang out at bowling alleys today? Are there even any malls left?

You've also given yourself quite the task given that the world we're in now seems to tire easily of the remake idea. I guess I could just say prepare yourself for an uphill battle, believe in what you are doing, and give it the kind of effort that you wish other screenwriters and filmmakers would instead of just phoning it in.

I'm talking to you, Jerry Bruckheimer.

Yes and make sure there's a lot of texting and idiocy. Don't refer to any music until 2 weeks before it comes out, then add the songs of that week.

If its something you would enjoy and like doing I say what the hell, go ahead and do it. I've yet to ever see this movie let alone come across it. I imagine it would be better than half the shit coming out of Hollywood now.

I admire your enthusiasm for the project. But The Wild Life?? It was on one of the cable channels recently and I tried to watch it, but it's tough. It's not a good movie at all. Obviously they were trying to cash in on the Fast Times craze, but they were way, way off with the end result.

I will say this for the flick.....the party at the end was damn funny, and was so cool that Ron Wood even showed up for it.

Yeah, the only thing I thought was good about The Wild Life was the score, although like most movies there were some entertaining parts. Clearly a Fast Times rip-off and not one-trillionth as good of course.

Are any of you fellow VH fans in the industry (or know someone who is) or are any of you produced screenwriters, just out of curiosity?

Didn't Cameron Crowe write both Wild Life and Fast Times? BTW, it was only a rip-off to the extent that revolved around high school kids - in that vain, Fast Times is a rip-off of Grease. Different plots, characters, etc. It did suffer from the fact that it was released close to Fast Times.

BTW, the stuff with Jim and his vet friend was underplayed.

I can't believe I never knew that (Cameron Crowe). Just IMDB'ed it. But I meant rip-off in that it was the same type of movie and the way it was structured: high school/partying/sex and different groups of character subplots who linked together slightly--and having a Penn brother play the wild one again. I did like it, but again nowhere near as much as Fast Times. It's like comparing Police Academy to Stripes.

Indeed Crowe wrote both. I get the feeling this was Crowe's attempt to appease the suits at Universal who were clamoring for Fast Times II after its success.

If you watch the retrospective on the Fast Times DVD, a few of the actors and makers of the flick touch on the remarks that came from the suits that a sequel naturally had to come.
