Hopefully Ed continues to get back on track and come out with some music that will show that he is back!

Until then, we will get more articles like this one.

Doesn't like Dave either - or anyone, it would seem...But, sadly, many nuggets of truth here, especially the notion of Ed being a tragic waste of talent. I hope he can prove everybody wrong.

For better or worse, this is what being a VH fanatic means - accepting this two-sided coin. They were the greatest band in the world in the early 1980s and we all have a lot of great memories. But then there's this "wasted time & talent" angle. And unfortunately, it's true. And I agree with the writer of this article on his basic premise - he sounds like a pissed-off VH fan who wonders what could've been...

And we're hoping that at age 56, EVH proves them wrong? We'll all buy the new CD and play it to death, but it won't erase a lot of wasted years.

All in all, it has been a waste. To many years have past. It will be great for us true fans if and when new material arrives. We will be the only ones to buy it. Why. Because the average consumer does not want to hear a bunch of old farts playing new music. They want to see a young boy or girl shake their ass in a music video played 20 times a day then hear the same processed shit they paid 13.00 for for 300 dollars live(errr) lip-synched. This band was doomed in the 90's. Eddie is the cause of it all. Ego is a powerful drug. So are the rest that he's taken throughout his life.

No doubt EVH has wasted his talent and much of his life in the bottom of a bottle and with his nose on the edge of a mirror, but it's his life not ours. I do hope he's moved beyond his addictions and is about to release a good album. And when I say good, I don't mean trying to reinvent the guitar and how it's played. I mean an album with great songs and one recorded with passion for the art. I say to hell with being a guitar god, those days are gone. Just be the very skilled musician that you are and share it with your fans, Edward!

    Ed's dead.
Sammy did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.
Michael did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.

Another messy, sometimes unreadable, quasi professional article that pukes up most of the same shit that's on here weekly.
Here's the line that did it for me.
"...but not many people with a great deal of credibility are going to claim Van Halen II or Women and Children First are top-shelf rock (or even Van Halen) albums."
I really challenge any living person with ears to sit in a room and crank VH2, then not say it's a "top shelf" rock album. Baffling.

This is a great point that I want to emphasize. There is a large contingent on here that seem to feel that a record in 2011 can somehow undo all of the wasted years since 1998 and legitimize VH's legacy. I think Ed's last chance to pull off that trick would have been the attempted reunion with Dave in 2000 or 2001. Had that been a success, and in that time since they put out 3 or 4 very respectable albums, you could objectively look at Ed's career and point to a short derail between Sammy's departure and Dave's return to an otherwise exemplary and productive career. At this late stage in the game, they can hope to go out with a bang but not much more.

The author may be a bit of a butt-head but I think his greater point is pretty spot on. Eddie was a guitar genius and he shat away close to 15 years of his potential artistic output.

Does anyone else remember the TV interview where a young and enthusiastic Ed (5150 time, I think) said words to this effect, "I'll always be making music, I maybe 80 years old and sitting on a stool but I'll always be out there playing".

Well Eddie is most likely fulfilling half of what he said. I don't doubt that he and Alex make are playing music a few times a week. Unfortunately for us, it's not being distributed and that is what gets everybody's panties in a wad. You don't have to play out to be a musician or to play music. You can do that in the confines of your house or in your converted racquetball court studio.

Now being out there playing, he is fibbing a bit. I give you that but who knows, but he doesn't owe us anything regarding that if he so chooses. It's his life. He didn't sign a contract with us fans that stated that he needs to produce an album every two years followed by a tour. Yes I would love for that to happen but he should be able to do with whatever he wishes in his life. Last time I checked I don't own Eddie Van Halen nor is he my indentured servant. He is his own person and like it or not, can do what he wants.

I agree with you, Ziggy, but I just wish he'd be honest about it - I have no problem at all with him wanting to retire and never play again, if that's what makes him happy - it's the fact that he keeps saying that an album will be coming out / a tour will be taking place that irks me. Why keep saying it if it's bollocks?
