    Default Samson and Hagar

    Two things:

    1. The Youtube videos of the Samson and Hagar songs ("Read my Thoughts" and "Reach Out to Find Me") have been taken down. Why? Is he planning on releasing these?

    2. Why did he not mention this in his book? He mentions every little band he's ever been in, but leaves out his first recorded songs?

There's something weird about this whole thing . . .

Yes, I was perplexed by the 'Samson and Hagar' thing - I've heard of Samson and Delilah and Sam / Hagar - but who / what is this?

sammy recorded 2 songs with this samson guy in the late 60's or very early 70's. they fancied themselves a simon and garfunkal type of band, I don't think anything ever became of anything they did. I'm not even sure if the material was released on radio or anything. It's very mellow stuff from what I remember.

Well, once again, there is no mention of that in his book. That biographer really did a lousy job. I don't think he knows Sammy as well as he claims.

"Prior to becoming a rock musician, Sammy Hagar pursued a brief career as a boxer. After quitting boxing, he formed The Fabulous Catillas band. In 1967, he performed with Pete Samson and they recorded and released two songs called “Read My Thoughts” and “Reach Out To Find Me.” He also performed with the Johnny Fortune Band, Justice Brothers, Skinny, and Dust Cloud, among other California bands, before joining the hard rock band Montrose in 1973 as their lead vocalist."

    http://www.superiorpics.com/sammy_hagar/

    Early years (1967-1973)

Hagar became interested in the burgeoning Southern California music scene, fronting his first band, The Fabulous Catillas. In 1967, the duo of Hagar and Pete Samson, backed by The Peppermint Trolley Co., recorded and released a two songs, entitled, "Reach Out To Find me" and "Read My Thoughts", on a 7" promo record under the Ranwood label.[5]

In 1968, Hagar joined his first professional group, the Johnny Fortune Band, as a vocalist and rhythm guitarist.[6] Hagar was also in some other pre-Montrose bands including Big Bang, Skinny, Dustcloud, Cotton, Jimmy, and Manhole.[7] These bands evolved into The Justice Brothers after hiring guitarist Bob Anglin and a keyboardist, Al Shane. They joined Hagar, bass player Jeff Nicholson and drummer David Lauser. They were the house band at a bar called "The Nightclub" in San Bernardino California before relocating to San Francisco. [8]

I think the problem is / was that Sam and his co-author were probably under pressure to produce a book of a certain length and narrative style in order to achieve maximum saleability. Unfortunately for ardent Sammy fans that inevitably means compromising the amount of depth and detail that can be accomplished.

Whilst I do see your point, this very much ties in with other comments / criticisms about the factual inaccuracies contained within the text - generally speaking, the average reader wants to hear about the dramas of personal relationships rather than all the other minutiae. If I want intricate biographical and statistical data I'll go to the appropriate official records rather than a necessarily sensationalised autiobiography.

I expect Sam's story could quite easily have filled nigh on a thousand pages but that size and style of book just isn't going to sell - and that is what the publisher, let alone Sam himself, requires.

    OK, I've finished now.
