Default good "mode, key, theory and improv" guitar dvd

    Hey guys,

question for you guitar players. I have been playing guitar for about 16 years and I can pretty much play most VH tunes and a lot of the classic rock stuff I want but I have to go off the tab because I cant read music.

I never learned much about theory and at 38 years old I am really yearning to break out of my VH riffs and get to know about the modes, what key I am in and some basic theory stuff. I dont really care about learning to read sheet music but I really want to be able to pick up my guitar and instead of copping VH licks or ACDC etc be able to improvise a little and have some more fun.

I took lessons back 16 years ago but forgot most of the stuff and I am not interested in paying someone 50bucks an hour. Are there any good dvds out there that you guys reccomend that could help me achieve a little more out of the theory end of it and be able to improvise more? I got the Curt Mitchell "rock outside the box" dvd back a year ago and thats ok but I am looking for something a little more basic so I can understand it more.

Not a DVD but rather a book, and one of the best I've ever read on the subject, as well:

Really easy, fun read and very informative. Definitely made me think outside the box, so to speak...

a friend of mine is a pretty accompished player and he sat down with me a while ago and explained how modes work in conjunction with the major scale to me in laymans terms (i've been playing for 30yrs and only knew the pentatonic!, everything else was just experience telling me what i was playing was 'right'). i found it easier to understand that anything i've ever read in books or articles in magazines, which i find confusing and you can't ask questions if you don't understand something. so my advice would be to find a local teacher who'd be willing to sit down and explain the basics in a manner you can understand and relate to, before you try the book approach. on a side note, learning this stuff screwed up my playing for a while because i was trying to over-analyze my playing. it took a while before i was able to relax a bit and just play, infact i don't think about it anymore, you could say i've purposely forgotten what i learned for practical reasons, but i can still sit down now and understand what i'm doing.

Too many books and tutors approach the modes as if they're incredibly complex, and thus make them incredibly complex for the student, when in reality they're really quite simple. Understanding the major scale is the key that unlocks everything. There aren't a million things to learn, just a few basic principles, and that can open music up for you.

One book I found really helped when I was starting out was The Guitar Handbook by Ralph Denyer. It explained the theory in a plain, simple, matter-of-fact way.
HERE AND GONE by Haylen Beck (Stuart Neville writing as...) - "It doesn't get better than this." - Lee Child, "Highly recommended." - Harlan Coben, "Cancel all your plans and settle in for the ride." - Ruth Ware, "This is a book that lives up to the buzz." - Alafair Burke
