Default Why can't kids be kids?

Geez what's this world coming to?

    http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local...120195644.html

Dodgeball, Red Rover, Wiffle Ball – those time-honored kids’ games, along with activities like Steal the Bacon and Capture the Flag – have been deemed dangerous by the state as part of an effort to tighten regulations for summer camps in the area.

Any indoor or outdoor recreational program that offers two or more organized activities, including one that falls on the “risky list” determined by state officials, will be considered a summer camp under the new rules and subject to the associated regulations.

The rules aim to curtail a loophole in previously passed regulations by the state Health Department that count activities like horseback riding and archery among the “risky list,” but do not include many activities like Freeze Tag and kickball featured in indoor programs.

At least one state legislator, Sen. Patty Richie (R-St. Lawrence County), fears the new rules will impair smaller programs’ ability to operate by requiring them to pay a $200 fee to register as summer camps.

However, Health Department spokeswoman Diane Mathis tells the Daily News the adapted “risky list” is merely a set of guidelines for recreational programs, and not all outfits that offer one of the activities on the list will be required to hire medical staff.

“There will be flexibility in how the law is implemented,” Mathis told the paper, adding that some programs may merely have to develop a plan to cope with medical emergencies to comply with the new regulations.

Still, Ritchie says including games like Freeze Tag on the “risky list” is a bit much.

“It looks like Albany bureaucrats are looking for kids to just sit in a corner in a house all day and not be outside,” she told the News. “I don’t think Wiffle Ball is a dangerous sport."

Parents appear divided on the issue, but at least one believes it’s wise to take precautions.

“Kids these days are kinda brutal so I can see those games being dangerous,” Bronx mom Kim Wainwright told the News.

Wiffle Ball? Wiffle Ball?!? How'd I manage to live so long by playing Wiffle Ball nearly every day every summer from basically the time I got up until it got dark (and sometimes later)? We had a freakin' metal shed at third base, yet I don't recall any of us overrunning the bag and slamming into it. A pool deck by 1st base, too. Not a single injury was recorded by myself or the usual 4 or more kids I played with and against daily. God help us all!

Bet ya can't hit my wiffle-curve...

Same here, billy, we played wiffle ball all summer too. I can't recall a single incident with even a minor scratch occurring. It's really sad what's going on these days. We even made an outfield wall with plywood and no one ever collided into it. Somehow we managed to stay safe even playing the devil's game of wiffle ball.

Kick ball is a dangerous sport. At our family picnic this past Sunday, I almost blew out my left knee and I didn't even slide into first. BUT - I wouldn't include any of these on a risky list. This country is getting too pussyfied. Grow some balls!!!

when our neighbours had the audacity to build a pool on our wiffle ball field (thus the pool deck that was still there after the pool was gone), we had to play at the park, and we used our bikes for the outfield wall!

Kids can legislate. Our rule as kids was that we could only tackle someone on the grass and we had to "try" to avoid tackling someone on the sidewalk. Same honor code with BB gun fights. "Try" to hit the chest and below and you could never pump the BB gun more than twice before shooting someone.

Dude, there's NO WAY you could of hit mine. As long as I could use masking tape to wrap the ball, it was un-hittable! lol!

We used an aluminum extention ladder laid longways as our outfield fence.

BTW BB guns are classified as WMD's now.

I didn't even need tape, Brew! My curveball was better than Kershaw's.
