Default "Once" is the best VH song since 1996!!!

It was a rainy day today, so I decided to listen to "VHIII' up to a good volume. Honestly, I dont find it too bad except for "How many say I" and "Josephina", which are both stinkers...
All the other songs are, in my opinion, ok songs. Not fantastic, but certain parts grab me like the outro to "Fire in the hole" which I reckon is Eddies best guitar work in the last 15 years.
BUT!!! Theres one song on this album that stands out. Its "ONCE", Overtime i've grown to really love it. It dawned on me today that its like Queen and it sounds like a song they'd put on "Innuendo". I closed my eyes today, and actually had Brian May in my head with Eddies guitar work...
If theres one song VH has done since the big 1996 split that I call "Classic VH", I say its "Once"...
What is understood need not be discussed

"Dont disturb my paradise. I've asked you once. I've asked you nice" - "SERIOUS JU JU"

"I am in a blissful state. Dont bug me!!!" - Richard Dreyfuss "The Goodbye girl" 1977

Wow, you are really going out on a limb there compadre.

One of the few listenable songs on VHIII.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

I've always liked From Afar. It's a different song. There is a bunch of good stuff on VHIII but the album wasn't recorded properly and a lot of the song arrangements aren't very good. I think it could have been a great album.

On III, I'll agree that Once is a very Queen-like and likeable song. However, I much prefer either Year To The Day or From Afar.

However, personally, I really like Learning To See for best in the last 15 years. I like Up For Breakfast too.

I like "Once." It's different and, for whatever reason, it always kind of resonated with me.
For some reason, however, it feels weird admitting that. I can only imagine that's what coming out of the closet feels like.

I like "Fire In The Hole" and "Up For Breakfast" could have been a really great song if it had some better lyrics.

I used to like "once" more than I do now. Dirty Water Dog has got to be my favorite from III. To bad that the good tunes on III get passed over so much because they suffer from being on III.

I liked "Once" the moment I heard it. And like you, I also hear the Queen influence. I recall thinking "Once" was definitely not the typical Van Halen formula and appreciated the song all the more for it. And Eddie's bass work is pretty interesting on this song as well. I also really like the way the song builds slowly. It's a bit like "Humans Being" in that regard. I think Gary's vocal sounds really angelic on this song. As others have stated, VH III has its hidden gems, "Once" is one of them.

I would think that "since 1996" is intended to mean after Best of Vol 1.

I liked the video mix of the song where Gary sung is a smoother voice. I felt it made the song much better. I do dig the song though.

I've always felt that "Once" could have been a Peter Gabriel song, I do like it.

"Learning to See" could have been the best, I just feel like it wasn't finished.

Sine 1996. Some high standards there.

Learning To See should have been one of the best VH songs ever. I love it, but it too was recorded really poorly...there is this weird screeching noise during the solo, like some kind of feedback underneath all the music, and the song seems unfinished, like they couldn't go any further with it and just released it anyway. Lyrically I hate Up For Breakfast, it shows Sam at his worst, like he just couldn't be bothered to write decent lyrics for it and slapped some silly lines together just to get it done. It's About Time I just hate now, I think the band sounds just like complete shit on that one.

Once... good... but... what do we have there? Programmed drums (no Al), Ed playing bass (no Mike). So only one VH member (sorry Gary). I call it a good EVH solo tune!
