    Default What happened to society?

so i'm recovering from surgery and have time to kill, i made the mistake of flipping on Maury Povich for a minute. Today is "that's not my baby - i didn't get your teen pregnant" day. Where do these people come from? What a bunch of pathetic losers and they're all having kids.

You can thank "The secret life of an american teenager", MTV's "Skins" and "Teen Mom" for that shit.

For some reason, being a single teen mom living off of your parents and expecting the world to roll out the red carpet for you is popular with todays youth. Fuck when I was younger, all I heard was that being a teenager with a child was a BAD thing. Now, its practically encouraged...

Just my luck. The one time Bristol Palin is on Maury, I fucking miss it.

Hope the surgery went well Mike; whatever it was for. Probably wasn't the best choice to watch Maury after coming out of the OR though. I'm surprised the Dr. didn't warn you of that.

I've always said that Jerry Springer took the 'Trash' out of the trailer park and brought it into the suburbs.

Totally! i could never stand any of that garbage. I'll admit to getting sucked into it out of pure disbelief on occasion if there's not much on, but it's such exploitive rubbish. Especially with the black folks that appear on the show. Usually it's some gangbanger piece of shit denying being the father of the chick, and trying to get out of child support. Just horrible crap. My friend Aziz who is from south Africa was talking about seeing it one day and being completely shocked at what he saw and how anyone could put it on TV.
I told him what's really scary is there's people who tune in religiously and keep the ratings up.
I guess it comes down to the example of it's hard to turn away from a train wreck.

My theory is that these people have always been around. Although, in the past we have always kept them hidden as the underbelly of society. Now they are brought to light, with news articles that circulate the web. Shows about their hoarding, their teenage pregnancy, their just plain trashy behavior that is fun to watch (i.e. Bad Girls Club, Tila Tequila, etc). Plenty of talk shows air their dirty laundry. Instead of mocking them and not wanting to be them, they are valued because of how entertaining, and dramatic they are, and thus turned into celebraties.

The only good thing is the show Teen Mom, does not encourage teenage pregnancy at ALL. Numbers on teen pregnancy have actually gone down in the last couple of years, I think that could be a positive side effect of the show. Although, I don't appreciate the over inflated salaries of the stars of that show, or how they get treated like celebrities in the media. I think that if girls do get pregnant because they want to get on that show, then they are the types that probably won't have much success in life anyway, if you know what I mean?

Good luck on your recovery. Hey, maybe watching that crap will actually make you heal faster.

Well all those reality shows like the Jersey Shore aren't helping matters. I think the people who watch that shit end up on Maury and Teen Mom. It's an endless pathetic cycle.

Yeah! Jesus! I forgot about that guy!
Now that I think back, I remember all the hoopla about him on the news.
I actually remember when Jerry Springer actually had a show much more like the old Donahue show...Not sensationalist at all, just discussion on inane topics, but then after Downey came on the scene and he started raking in the ratings, it was like instant format change, then Springer totally became the king of the shit pile because he had all the over the top garbage.

Anyone remember Wally George? It may have only been a SoCal thing (his show was on KDOC). It was funny to see some of the loonies that ended up on his show.

I guess that's where I'm wired differently - I don't really find people acting badly or stupidly to be particularly entertaining, unless I know it's fiction, and even then, I'm much more drawn to something that's legitimately funny (cleverly written, not aiming for the groin or the 10 year old, etc.) or dramatic (hero vanquishes villain, people bond together to survive Irwin Allen-esque disaster, etc.)

I agree mike. Society now sucks. Everything from tri-sexuals to vampires is now acceptable. My kids ain't watching anything til they're 17.
