Default Air Force spending $4 million a day for Libya war

WASHINGTON – The Air Force secretary says the service has been spending about $4 million a day to keep 50 fighter jets and nearly 40 support aircraft in the Libya conflict, including the cost of munitions.

Secretary Michael Donley tells reporters that the Air Force has spent $75 million as of Tuesday morning on the war. He says the U.S. decision to end its combat strike role in the conflict will cut costs, but he could not say by how much.

He says the Air Force has spent close to $50 million on the relief effort for the Japan earthquake, including $40 million to evacuate between 5,000-6,000 U.S. personnel.

The total U.S. costs for the Libya air campaign as of March 28 were $550 million, not counting normal deployment spending.

Pretty cheap compared to the Iraq war. Actually an incredible bargain.

Healthcare cost of treating Iraq war veterans (we're not talking about equipment, salaries, rebuilding, no, just healthcare of veterans ALONE): $350 billion to $700 billion.

Running costs in 2010: $46 billions.

Libya is only 1% of just that. So when people criticize the cost of Libya, they have to be aware that the cost of this Libyan thing is less than 1% of the total cost of the Iraq war. People got used to it, but have forgotten the monumental, biblical catastrophe that this illegal foolish adventure in Iraq has been.

I couldn't give two shits about the money, it's not the issue with me... I'm tired of being the world's fucking police force for the UN. We need to get out of the UN ASAP, retain our own sovereignty, and worry about US for a while.

Amen and hallelujah to that statement! And by "for a while" let's go with say 50 years for starters. It would probably take that long just to rebuild all of our own slowly crumbling infrastructure. If someone actually threatens our sovereignty and they can be clearly identified, then hit 'em hard. Otherwise, no more world's police force. Unfortunately I don't think this will ever happen.

Don't get me started on the UN. They constantly look to us when their "sanctions" fail, to be their enforcement muscle, and love us to death when we have their back, then turn around and let dictators like Chavez and Ahmadinejad, who have openly advocated wiping us off the map, an open forum to spout their lies...two faced sons of bitches...all of them.

Chavez saying this and that is not really a threat. The guy likes talking. He's never taken any action that could threaten the US. What do you suggest we do?

That's fine, we'll take the heat on that one, at the cost of retaining our own sovereignty. The interests of the American people should never be in the hands of countries that A) don't understand our way of life, and B) couldn't give at rats ass what's best for us.

Most of the world sees it as arrogance, that's fine, but we should be willing to go our own way without getting "permission" for things that directly affect our interests as a nation.
All other countries should have the same attitude, it's so sad that more don't, and leave their own peoples interests open for debate and approval from foreign nations that couldn't care less, and are only interested in progressing their own agendas.

Well do you mean that the people who thought that the Bush regime threatened their national interest should've invaded this country to engineer "regime change" in America by force? Because that's what Bush did in Iraq. There were millions of people around the world who were terribly unhappy about the Bush regime and who would've welcomed a "change."

So who decides when a country can act? It can't be a free for all, a global version of the wild west.

That's where the UN comes in. It's flawed, but there's no better system yet.

Do you not remember all the bullshit we went through with the UN before going in there? We had plenty of intel, our own and from foreign sources, that said Saddam had WMD's, yes, that's a threat to our safety and our interests.

At the time, most of this country believed he had them, The UN obviously believed he had them or they wouldn't have imposed countless sanctions on him, which as usual did absolutely nothing in making Saddam let the inspectors do their jobs. He was given every conceivable chance to come clean, and he chose to consistently thumb his nose at the rest of the world, all the while murdering all of his domestic opposition. Just like Libya is doing now.

Hindsight on Iraq is great, yes it was a mistake, maybe he never had them, or got rid of them to other countries, but it is hindsight.

And someday, yes, another country will come here looking to force a regime change, countries have been invading other countries since the beginning of time, some of them for a lot less reasons than why we went into Iraq, it's the nature of the beast. That's exactly why we need to stay on our toes, keep our military strong, and stay on the cutting edge of military technology. It may happen in my lifetime, it may not, but it's inevitable.
