Default Recommended Rock 'n Roll Reading

I know there's a book thread in Non Music, but with a lot of people reading Sam's new book, I thought it might be nice to have a thread devoted to book about music (I don't think there is one - if there is, someone point it out and I'll merge to it (unless it's pre-hack)). I enjoy reading about musicians, especially if they are bands or singers I care about. Some I've enjoyed over the years:

"U2 On U2" - pretty thorough documenting of their history by the band themselves.

"The Beatles Anthology" - accompaniement to the mini-series and CD collection of the same name, similar to the U2 book in that it's told by the Beatles themselves, but of course for John they had to dip back to his old interviews to get his thoughts, and they used a mix of old and new material from the other 3

"I Me Mine" - George Harrison's book - not a lot of detail on his life to that point, but it's nice that he includes the lyrics for all of his songs (up to the time the book was written) and some commentary on each.

"Crazy From The Heat" - David Lee Roth's rambling account of his life is always entertaining

"The Beatles: An Illustrated Record" - originally released in '75 and updated in '80, many full size page pictures of Beatles (British) album covers and reviews of each (British) album and single, including the solo years.

I really would like to get "Rock & Roll Gearhead" by Billy Gibbons, but as of yet I have not! And a good KISS bio!

That's an awesome book, great for the coffee table

Only real music biography I've read is "I Am Ozzy" and it was really good. I've got "Red" on the Nook, haven't started it yet.

There's a good biography on Howlin' Wolf I want to pick up. He has an interesting story, much different from many of the other Chess musicians of the day.

I liked Dave Mustaine's book. Ton of crazy stories about Metallica & Megadeth. Also some tough addiction stuff.

    Just finished "Clapton".

Others I have read over the past few years that come to mind:
"No One Here Gets Out Alive" by Danny Sugarman: epic for any fan of the Doors or Jim Morrison.
Agreed with the above comment on Slash and "Sacr Tissue" by Kiedes, I would add "The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star" by Nikki Sixx....wow....just, wow!

I read those recently, which surprised me. Don't normally bother with rock bios.

It is a shock that they are alive agreed. I still couldn't get over the "devils" in Slash's book. How he saw them so often they became friends until the day they attacked his bathroom, armed with machine guns. That was the most bizarre story in a book full of them. I can't understand how the guy seems so grounded or even aware. You'd expect him to be a drooling wreck after the damage he must have inflicted on his mind.

It's not a rock book, but Pete Hamill's "A drinking life" is an amazing autobiography about his life and especially his drinking. It helps that he is actually a real writer too. Wonderful book and highly recommended.
A man could lose himself in a country like this.

Not really, a bit of history on ZZTop from what I remember, I bought it for my dad last year for his birthday. Awesome pictures, it has a section on his guitars, one called "the life", and one for all of his cars, and lots of "eye-candy"

Not a true "biography" by any means, type of book you leave out on the coffee table.

    My fav, Cadzilla!!

Ace Frehley has a book coming out in April which should be great. Also, the Untold Story of Journey due out in May.

Sammy's book is great. I was done with it in five days.

    Other books that were good:
    1. The The Limit: The Untold Story of The Eagles
    2. Kiss and Make-Up by Gene Simmons
    3. Crazy From The Heat by Roth
    4. Heavier Than Heaven: A Biography On Kurt Kobain
    5. AC/DC: Maximum Rock & Roll
    6. Take a Walk on the Darkside: Rock and Roll Myths, Legends, and Curses
    7. Rock Lives: Profiles and Interviews by Timothy White

Finished this one about a week ago....some really interesting stories about who Felder met (and sometimes even taught) while growing up in Gainesville, FL....to say nothing of the power of Henley and Frey being very much like that the Bros Van Halen wield.

I just finished Sammy's book. Before that I read Ozzy's I Am Ozzy, and before that I read Keith Richards' Life.
    All were very good.
I have Motley Crue's The Dirt on hold at the library. Looking forward to that.
And Steven Tyler has a book coming out in May. I think it's called "Do the Noises in My Head Bother You?"

Just started on Ozzy's book today, have another on AC/DC (the title eludes me at the moment) lined up after that.
