    Default Happy 25th Anniversary, "5150!"

"5150" was released on March 24, 1986. Not much more needs to be said, the videos speak for themselves

Remember the day very well. I bought the record that day after school and when I got home I sat in the living room and listened to it on our console stereo that was as big as our couch.

First time through the album I really did love it. I was immediately caught off guard by the sound. The total departure from the known Van Halen sound hit you in the face. But I thought the songs were awesome and Sam fit in as well as anybody could.

I love all the Sam VH albums but 5150 is the only one that has a special feeling to it for me.

I'm very much over it, and do have an appreciation for some Van Hagar tunes... but I'll never forget the horror of hearing "Why Can't This Be Love" in my high school parking lot on the radio for the first time.

Here in 2011... I'm just glad they were able to make great music from 86 - 96 rather than fade away. Still would have preferred a name change, but all in all - we are all winners... Happy Birthday 5150!

    My experience echo's yours!
In addition though, prior to it's release, when the rumors were swirling about a single coming out soon, I had been at the ready to hear the first single over the radio. Strangely enough, I believe the first actual single released was WCTBL, but on the stations I listened to which were harder rock oriented, it was passed on. But then I was in the shower one night, and this tune came on the radio; no announcement as to who it was. The keys and guitar start playing "Hmmmmm....who's this?" and as soon as Al's snare, and Ed's little whammy lick hit the speakers...I knew!

I loved the song. Sammy sounded great singing it. Man. I had to get the new album, because if the radio single sounded that good, the albums gotta be great. It didn't disappoint. Summer Nights became the anthem of that summer of me and my friends. The countless cruises in cars with a cassette copy of 5150. Memories man!
Listening back now...I'm not as fond of Dreams....A bit dated, and heard it tons, but the rest of the album holds up real well, and I've always loved the vibe of the album. You put it on, and it makes you feel good.
I'd worn out two LP's and multiple cassettes of the album before I had gotten a CD player....And the same goes for LWAN too. That old VHS took a beating! Got the DVD now of coarse, and it's in frequent rotation in my viewing.

Happy 25th. 5150. The soundtrack of my teens!

HA!! I also was quite horrified at hearing "Why Can't This Be Love" the 1st time on the radio, a few days before the album was released. The local radio station announced they would play a new VH track that hour. Of course, they didn't play it until 5 minutes of the next hour. I remember feeling cheated that I had wasted much of my evening just waiting to hear that song.
Because I was only 15 years old and lived in the boonies, I had my mom pick up 5150 after work on the day it was released. Regardless of much of the synth-pop, I thought it was a good album. I especially enjoyed the guitar work on Summer Nights, Good Enough, and 5150.

The end of 'Summer Nights' and the middle of '5150' are examples of VH taking it up a notch and rockin' hard!

5150 was the very first VH cassette i ever bought when i was 12 years old.
I remember i got it at Target in 1986.

They had "5150" and "EEAS" side by side and i could have gone either way.

Think i made the right choice.

You did, but EEAS was good at the time.

As much as I hate most of Dave's solo work I did get a ton of mileage out of EEAS. I never listen to it anymore but I was into it quite a bit back then.

The best VH album ever....and in my top 5 albums.....EVER!!!

Hopefully it will be remastered this year.

"5150", "Summer nights" and "Love walks in" are untouchable.

I remember buying "5150" the day it was released at the Wherehouse on Beach Blvd. and Lincoln Ave. in Anaheim, CA on my way to Huntington Beach with my girlfriend. The Wherehouse is out of business but that girlfriend has now been my wife for 21+ years.

"5150" is probably the best Sam era VH album. I, too, was not enamored with "Why Can't This Be Love?" when I first heard it. In fact, it's still not one of my favorite VH tunes. It's kind of the "Pretty Woman" of the Hagar era for me. I know a lot of people can't stand "Love Walks In", but I dig that song. Eddie's solo at the 4:20 mark through the end of the song is so melodic and just fits perfectly with the music.

"It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth

"If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving is not for you"

"Be careful what you wish for because you just might lose what you already have"

"Women and Children First ... The REAL Van Halen III"
