Default Mean Street - VH III Tour

If you can ignore Gary's stage moves and just listen, this is a killer rendition of Mean Street. Ed's just making that Wolfgang scream. And then came another breakup, cancer, divorce, renewed addiction, a failed reunion with Hagar, more addiction, a successful reunion with Roth, sobriety (hopefully), new marriage, new hope? All that in 13 years...

Enjoy a little EVH seen too little of in the last 13 years:

For as much as despise all things VH3, I would go see that tour again tomorrow if it meant seeing THAT Ed on guitar again.

Jesus, you watch that vid and it smacks you in the face how much Ed still cared about his playing. Everything about that song was spot on....the tone, the clean playing, the accuracy....everything. Awesome.

Yeah, Ed was playing with some renewed passion here. I think he felt liberated to finally be able to play some Roth tunes again. There's so much cool stuff going on here. I love the "Hot for Teacher" ending and how Al count downs and ends it perfectly with Ed. I still have the VHS recording of this concert when it came out on MTV - Live at the 10 Spot or something like that. Watched it for the first time in awhile the other night. Made me both glad and sad.

Unfortunately, yes. But after the disaster of 2004 and parts of 2007 wouldn't it be a worthy trade off?

Sigh... in retrospect, I wish I would have seen that tour but I passed. I bought the tape right when it was released though. Van Halen was beginning to fall off my radar and by the time of the 2004 tour I wasn't following them at all. I know there are also clips of them playing I'm The One on this tour and it's the last time Ed played the solo almost note for note- he really burned up the fretboard. For the 2004 soundcheck and the 2007/08 tour he skated by sections of the solo with tapping. Plus on that VH III tour I think Without You live was really good. Ed and Mike jamming that riff around 3:08 is great, and ending with the line from The Beatles We Can Work It Out "Life is very short, and there's no time" was prophetic. He should have followed that advice.

Also fun to see "grown up Ed's" wardrobe choices on this tour.

Eddie seemed to be on top of his game for this tour....no doubt there. FITH and Without You sound decent in the studio. I'm still glad I didn't haul my ass out to Devore for this shit.

I really like Gary in Extreme, but damn he just looks and sounds so out of place in Van Halen.

I can't explain it, but I think he sounds like shit anytime he tries to do anything with VH, and in Extreme he "sings like angel".
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Agreed. Gary has sounded great in everything he's done but VH. The new Hurtsmile album he did with his brother is really good, too:

I stopped watching after Gary grabbed his own bunghole.

I agree that Ed sounds killer, but in the show I saw here in St. Louis in 2008, he was just as good. No exaggeration.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

LOL, maybe he had an itch. Now I'll admit that I'm not an Extreme fan. I really just haven't ever checked out any of their catalog. You can't be a fan of two shirtless guitarists. For those who might know, does Gary act like that on stage while performing with Extreme? Yes, it's a real clash of personal styles in VH circa-1998. Ed was definitely trying to look more mature for whatever reason, but Mike and Al still seem classic VH. However, if Gary wouldn't have cut his hair short, not worn suits, not tried to sing like Sammy (which he was clearly coached to do), and not done those squats every few minutes it might have worked. Haha, that's a lot of "ifs".

Agreed regarding Ed's playing on the last leg in '08. I saw him May '08 at Hershey from the 5th row and his playing was spot on. His tone was not quite as good as '98 (yet better than '07 Philly), but then there's 10 more years of Ed's hearing loss between those '98 and '08 shows. Plus I liked the honest approach in '98 where he just had his live wet/dry/wet three speaker cab setup on stage. None of this wall of 4X12 cabs like in '07/'08 where most of them are doing nothing. People do like to see that though when they attend a rock concert.

From the videos I've seen on YouTube, I would say kind of but not exactly. He looked confused and out of place on stage with VH. Gary was greatly influenced, both vocally and performance-wise, by Freddie Mercury & Roger Daltry. He's kind of a hybrid of both. He's also done opera i.e. his performances in Jesus Christ Superstar. I don't know how to say it any other way than to say he looks gay at times while performing. He clearly wasn't a good match for VH. Vocally, he had the chops for it but was forced to sing out of his range and style. I feel bad for him. He's a great singer and lyricist and his time with VH is not a good reflection of this.

That was the thing with the whole III deal.
The album was terrible, but the tour man. At least Eddie. The guy was on fire! He played so well, and reminded me honestly of the Dave era energy.
I still remember the night that Australia show came on the tube.
Yeah...Gary grabbing his cutter from between his legs was, uhhh....disturbing, but Ed's playing made up for the nastiness.

At least Gary didn't stick his hands IN his pants like Sammy did on LWAN during Panama.
