$10 drug now $1500 after FDA grants monopoly

Preventing preterm births just got 150 times more expensive, now that KV Pharmaceuticals has gained exclusive rights to produce a progesterone shot used to prevent premature births in high-risk mothers.

Although the shot has been available in unregulated form from specialty compounding pharmacies for years for $10 a pop, the Food and Drug Administration recently granted KV Pharmaceuticals sole rights to produce the drug, which will be marketed as Makena and cost $1,500 per dose -- an estimated $30,000 in total per pregnancy.

Well, they gotta get what they can. When the first baby is born preterm while the mother is using it, and they need the 15 million to settle the lawsuit.

People complain about drug prices, but don't want to give up their right to litigation, can't have it both ways.

A friend of mine is a pharmaceutical rep. Each drug that gets to the market costs close to a billion dollars from start to finish to develop. That's not even counting the drugs that go through hundreds of millions in the development stage and then get shelved.

Many, many, many, many drugs that show incredible success never make it to market because they can't afford the drug trials that the FDA puts on at the cost of the manufacturer.

Dr. Alan Chow has invented a cure for some types of blindness. It will never reach the market. Why? After 7 years and $50 million in trials, the FDA wants another trial which will cost $100 million and take 3 years. But investors fear it won't cure enough blind people to be a return on their investment, so it's not going to happen.

How'd you like to be this type of blind and the FDA says you can't have this?

I have two points: one, the FDA should be voluntary while private companies should be allowed to compete with it. Two, the incredible people that invent these things only have money behind them to accomplish it because the investors want to see a return on that investment. To expect them NOT to is to expect them to stop developing new cures.
