High School students to get Wakeup Calls from school...

A whole new generation of kids raised by public education nannies...

Chronically tardy and absent students at one Massachusetts school are about to get early morning wakeup calls.

B.M.C. Durfee High School Principal Paul Marshall says the school department's automated calling system will make calls to students considered chronically late or absent at 6:15 a.m. starting this week.

The principal of the Fall River school says a student is considered a chronic offender if they are absent or tardy five or more times during a 45-day term.

He says about 6 percent of the school's 2,200 students fit the category.

Marshall says wakeup calls are part of the school's goal of achieving a 95 percent attendance rate.

He says the calls are an alternative to a cycle of suspensions and detentions that may further discourage students from attending.

How many of them are actually getting up on time but not making it to school. My junior and senior years of High School I was late over 130 times combined because I went to breakfast with friends first. Hell after 10 times being tardy the school gave you a day off in the form of an out of school suspension. Worked out great for my friends and I because we all got the same days off!

Well get this. My daughter is in kindgergarten in an open classroom situation. My wife volunteers 2-3 times a week in her class, is one of the model parents, is involved in everything. My daughter (and I'm not tooting my horn we're just lucky and it matters for this story) is very smart, has a ton of friends, her teacher loves her, and we hear nothing but amazing things about how well she reads, etc. As a parent, I'm very proud, I can tell she is special. She does chorus, she's involved in other activities, she loves school. Like I said, we're really lucky. So far anyway.

But we sometimes get her there late, I mean even 20 seconds late. We don't mean to , it just happens. It's never more than a minute at the most. But she's tardy. And she has to get a slip. We realize she's been late, we're trying to make sure she's there on time everyday, I mean not even 10 seconds late. But it happens.

So about 3 weeks ago we get this form letter from our school district. It is the worst thing I've ever read. Basically telling us we're horrible parents, school is important if we didn't know, we could be sued by the county, and CPS could come and take our daughter away. Over fucking tardies?? And my daughter is a model student, and my wife is the model parent volunteer. We were floored. Yes we know she can't be late, and we totally agree, but holy shit guys, if you saw this letter you'd think we were being accused of child abuse. Actually we were.

So my wife freaks out, calls the principal who she knows well. Principal says don't worry, blah blah, it's a form letter the district sends out for ANY thing bad. You need to get 3 or 4 of them before something happens. Well what the hell, doesn't make us feel better that we got something like that!! Needless to say she hasn't been even 10 seconds late since then, but if you guys read this letter. I should scan it. Maybe I will when I get back from vacation.

Oh and in fact, we were worried about taking this trip to Cabo because she'd be out 6 days, we weren't even going to go even though it's a trip we take every year with my parents. But her teacher gave her work, and I guess that counts as being there so she won't be marked absent. And it was a lot of work too!

Man school was nothing like this when we were there.

EDIT: LOL I just walked out of the bedroom here at 10 AM and my daughter and wife are sitting at the table doing more of this homework.

Things are soooo much different today. I have friends my age who don't have kids who did not understand why my youngest had so much trouble in kindergarten...all they could think of was back when we were in school and kindergarten meant milk, cookies, storytime and naptime...it isn't at all like that anymore.

Yeah man it's NOTHING like that anymore. My daughter is learning and doing things at 6 that no way we were doing. I can totally see how it could get overwhelming. Like I said, we're just lucky. Like I'm listening in the background to this homework she's doing, it sounds like 5th grade work, I'm serious. I really worry school doesn't let kids be kids anymore.

Yup, my youngest is in 6th grade now, and he can easily spend 3 hours a night on homework on some nights. Almost doesn't seem right...I think I had half that when I was in high school.

Totally agree. In our school district, elementary school ends at 4th grade and then you go to an intermediate school for 5th and 6th, middle school for 7th and 8th and then high school. We were still in elementary school in 5th grade when I went to school. The difference is there is no longer any kind of "fun" activities during the intermediate grades. They don't do a "fall" party, a Valentine's party, get an afternoon to watch a movie in the gym for Christmas, etc. Since it's not middle school, there are no sports or dances or real extra curricular activities. They have nothing on the playground except basketball hoops so most kids stand around for the short time they get for recess. It is day in and day out, pounding the books. I understand that the kids are there to learn but, is it really taking away from their learning time to take an hour one afternoon for a little fun? It reminds me of Mary Poppin's and the song "A Spoonful of Sugar", the schools don't seem to understand it would make the learning go down a lot easier.

Sounds like the kindergarten teacher is a Cherone era Van Halen fan.

The school system is the same way here in CT. Like you, my 10 year old son excels in school. Teachers can't say enough good things about him yadyadyada. He's read all 7 Harry Potter books since Christmas, prior to that he read The DeVinci Code. I'm not taking away anything from my 13 year old, he does great also, makes honor roll and such but the level to which they are being taught is years above what I was taught at the same time.

It's not her teacher, her teacher is great and loves my daughter. It's the way the school works and the rules she has to follow.

if the school year was longer, and the school day was longer, we wouldn't have those problems. They are trying to cram too much in too short a time.

Most kids would learn better with frequent breaks in the day....but they won't get them..the school day is too short

Most kids would be healthier if they had more recesses...but they are not going to get them

Most kids would retain more info and read more if the summer break wasn't as long, but parents fight against longer school days and longer school years because of the tradition of summer vacations

In my area, 4th and 5th grade elementary students are doing algebra that only 30 years ago wasn't available to students until 7th grade Junior High School GT Math (8th grade for most of the other students back then).

Much of the problem that I see in the public schools in my county is the intense pressure upon educators to keep up with curriculum guides that dictate what needs to be taught each and every single day in each classroom. This seems to be done at the expense of the students who are struggling to keep up. God forbid anyone (teachers or students) miss a day or two of school.

When I was teaching special education, I felt that every day was a race. There was never enough time to prepare for the curriculum demanded of that day or the next. I won't even begin to discuss all of the assessments for students that were required.

Definitely...and to make things worse, my middle son's HS is going back to block classes next school year just in time for him to be a Senior.
