not sure if coddling is the problem but we sure are screwing them up.

over half of the students in my wife's last class didn't have 2 parents at home. That's probably the main reason you're seeing so many screwed up kids. That's not the only factor but it's the biggie. Kids with a messed up home life (parents divorcing, don't know their father, etc) are being setup by their parents for a messy life. Some will overcome the issues but most won't. Same goes the other way around - you find messed up kids from good families as well but most of them aren't able to screw up that big a head start in life.

Coddling is a huge part of the problem, though.

Families protect their kids far too much to the point where the child isn't held accountable for anything. This in turn puts the child in a position of strength and allows them to feel entitled; like they can get away with anything.

Say Baby Junior Sonofabitch starts a fire in the bathroom in his school. There's evidence that he did it, but the parents continue to say, "It couldn't have been my son, there's just no way!" I feel that if the parents hold them accountable, there'd be a greater sense of disappointment and, thus, more of a reason to not act out again.

I just don't think enough parents do that. I'm no parent so I can't speak from that standpoint, but I do know how I was raised, and would like to believe I have a good head on my shoulders.

that is certainly a problem sometimes. I've heard of this type of thing from my wife with parents of her students. The conversation usually goes like:

It's Mike's Wife : "Your son through a chair across the room"
    Parent- "no way"
    IMY - "really he did"
    Parent - "are you sure?"
IMY - "i do know what your son looks like"
    Parent - "couldn't be"

But that's the exception to the rule. Most good parents don't fight teacher authority in this type of thing. The problem is that these parents are becoming a minority. Most of the troublemakers in her class can be predicted by meeting the parents and have a 5 minute conversation with them before school starts. From shitty homes come shitty kids.

I agree, remember how badly Dan Quayle was blasted when he spoke of the breakdown of "family values" and how he was mocked for it????

he was right on that. Anyone who thinks otherwise should spend a week or two in a school.

I think they mocked him more because he was acting as though "Murphy Brown" being a single parent on TV was real life.

Misspelling Potato and being a Republican also had something to do with the mocking

As for Murphy Brown, I think he was trying to make the case that the example set by the character to intentionally be a single mother was a poor decision. I think he was commenting on the entertainment media and not the character in the show.

Wasn't Al Gore and his wife blasting "Heavy Metal" around this time for making kids suicidal and violent? They wanted to censure records by Twisted Sister? Ahh, the pre-Global Warming Gore, that takes me back.

tried watching the video but I was getting sound from two different videos at the same time! That was the teacher with the blog, correct?

Just a variety of problems today - coddling would be one, parents who think that "M" on the video game stands for "must buy/play this with my 10 year old" would be another, parents who try to buy their kids' love with all kinds of expensive toys (and then allow them to take them to school with them), abuse laws that make parents afraid of disciplining their children and so they don't, schools that spend the majority of their 180 days training the kids to take a test, tv ads that sell erections, "artists" that create music barely fit for a pirate ship but sold to our children, video game companies that treat crime and war as a game, million dollar athletes and entertainers with 10 cent brains - the list could go on.

Oh, I dont think there's a single thing wrong with the kids of today. not a thing. It's perfectly normal to be disrepsected and called a bitch to your face in your own house.

I say legalize beatings. In fact, parents should be rewarded with gas cards for kicking their kids right in the teeth for mouthing off.

Can't tell you how many kids have been shown the door at my house for being nothing short of mouthy brats. I have been confronted by these kids' parents and asked why they were told to leave, or worse, how dare I pass judgement on their little angels...I know no one wants to think their kids do no wrong, but reality should tell them otherwise.

Doesn't help when these kids see people in Jersey Shore as role models...
