Went to a book store yesterday and they still had the last issue on the shelf. The new one was not out yet.

I just finished reading it and it's a great read. The writer clearly digs the tunes and appreciates the musicianship from all members of the band (though Mike's bass only gets one mention - Girl Gone Bad - and no mention of classic background vocals on Drop Dead Legs). Huge credit is given to Dave and Ed in particular.

There's a lot about the clash with The Clash at the Us Festival - it's hilarious when their manager admits that they had to play the Us Festival, despite threatening to pull out, because "Van Halen would call us communists" if they didn't. I'd heard this before but there is more to it than I'd known before.

What you don't get, though, is the negativity within the band that we've all become accustomed to in other articles and books written about them. OK, so there IS tension when Ed built 5150 to take control over the (musical direction) of the band but it seems that it is 'distance' or 'estrangement' between Ed and Dave, rather than real animosity and what would later become hatred. I just find it sad, to be honest.

I was only 12 when '1984' came out and being so young, and living in the UK, I might as well have been on Mars as far as getting a real sense of the band at that time is concerned (in fact, it was only when I was 15 and heard '5150' that I got into VH). For me, then, it was 'imagined nostalgia' and it was great to find that that era was not the constantly negative experience that I've been used to reading about. (Or maybe the writer is just ignorant of this himself.)

BTW, there's no pink lettering on the cover in the UK version of Classic Rock - it's silver. Classy!

The edition I got has Gary Moore on the cover - they must have redesigned during the print run when he died. Does your edition also have the Gary Moore tribute feature?
HERE AND GONE by Haylen Beck (Stuart Neville writing as...) - "It doesn't get better than this." - Lee Child, "Highly recommended." - Harlan Coben, "Cancel all your plans and settle in for the ride." - Ruth Ware, "This is a book that lives up to the buzz." - Alafair Burke

Sounds cool to me, I'll be checking it out.

There probably was a lot more tension in the band than we knew of, we just didnt hear about it. We had CIRCUS & HIT PARADER magazine for our band insight.

No internet, and we used pay phones, cassettes, and albums.

I could go on and on.....
