I worked from home today and was able to sit through the entire hour. I also enjoyed it, and hopefully it inspired some people to pick up the guitar who might have been avoiding it for various reasons (too old, not musically-oriented, etc.). I especially liked the part where he said that early in his career he was able to spend a lot of time learning the instrument since he didn't have distractions like surfing internet porn. LOL

It wasn't a technical lesson per se, but it was probably the perfect amount of generalized information to fit into an hour time frame. I hope it remains posted on a web site or youtube for others to see- like those who may have overslept.

i liked the part where he said:
Don't work on your weakness's, instead work on your strengths, because within those strengths are weakness's and they are the ones that need working on. That right there was very inspiring (for me atleast) i actually found it kind of comforting, because after 30yrs of playing there are some things i'm great at and some things i'm not so good at and i find it frustrating, when really i shouldn't, especially when it bears little relevence to what i actually play on a regular basis. i hope everyone who watched it found atleast one little nugget that they can digest.

I saw it up to about 7k viewers at one point. Not sure what the final count is.

Steve's a fantastic artist. Not only do I dig his music but I also love his approach and can identify with his esoteric viewpoints on making music.

I dug when he talked about giving a chord etc a soul. Feeling it, associating a mood and basically an emotional feeling to a sound and exploring.

I think that type of talk and inspiration was a excellent lesson and heads up to a lot of the young internet age players. A lot of people these days learn things from tabs, being shown step by step on the internet and play like machines. It was a nice organic message for any player especially those who rely too much on "painting by numbers" so to speak.

    Steve's a great dude, I enjoyed it!

Wow! Looks like I missed an entertaining deal!
That's kind of the way I approach the guitar. I listened to a lot of guys like Vai, and EVH etc. who preached the whole focus on your strengths thing. it makes sense. Especially for me as I'm a writer. I mean, there's some tunes you can try to learn, spend hours, days, weeks, trying to nail it and still not be happy with the result. So instead, I'd often play tunes I had "mastered" and tried to expand on them, and make them my own. it's cool advise, and solidifies your musical direction.
Take a friend of mine, Dave. He's a piano player in local R&B bands that just play covers for the most part, and he only plays what he reads.

He's kind of a pissy old guy....trashes other musicians "hates" guitarists...you know...the classic purist snob musician. But that's just it. He's not actually snobby, he's just frustrated. We got real sloppy drunk one night not long ago, and he told me that he envied guys like myself who can pretty much improv, or pick things up quickly by ear, where as he has to basically read and hammer stuff out.
The reality is for me it came out of nescesity to work on my improvisational skills early, because i never knew who I'd be playing with next.
One day I'd be playing a session, the next, I'd be playing a club with someone else. it's like "here's the music...learn it by tomorrow!"
After all these years, I'm still not the fastest player, I don't really read, and I'm far from being the consumate well rounded musician, but the strengths I do have, or recognized early, I've worked hard and hopefully improved on.
Sure, I still throw out the odd turkey solo....happened the other night. Just wasn't really feelin' it and kind of tripped over myself because I was on autopilot but you move on.

Vai, and of course Satch too, have got some very cool principles.
