    Default EVH MXR flanger

    Hey guys,

    got a question for you. I have had my EVH striped MXR flanger for the last couple years or so and I have NEVER thought that the so called "unchained" switch sounds even close the deep sweeping flange Ed got in Unchained. Does anyone else have this problem? I have to leave that switch off and just adjust my flanger manually using the knobs and cranking the regen up like my old MXR flanger and then I can get the Unchained sweeping sound no problem.

    Is this normal? When I have the switch on it sounds kinda more like a hear about it later / ATBL flange.

    Is something wrong with my flanger or are they all like that?

    oh yeah BTW, I dont run it in the effects loop of my 5150 like I do with my dd3 delay and my chorus, I run it in line with the guitar with the rest of my MXR stuff.

    thanks,

    Rob

    I feel that my EVH flanger does a great Unchained sweep with that button activated, sounds just like the recording. I was under the impression that Eddie's flanger settings remained the same for all of his flanger stuff...he didn't change the settings on his unit, he just found one he liked and left it like that. The same setting works for ATBL and HAIL as well as later stuff like Aftershock. I just use the Unchained setting on mine and don't bother switching it off, works great for all kinds of stuff.

    Eddie did change the regen a little bit throughout the songs but other than that he pretty much left the knobs alone. I have an old article that says that. then again Ed says different things at different times so you never know whats right ornot. If you try to play HAIL with it set for the unchained heavy sweep it sounds too flangy.

    at leat mine does.

    anyways I guess in that case my flanger is a lemmon

    I used to have mine after the distortion stage of my signal path (I use a Wampler Pinnacle to simulate a high gain 5150/old Marshall) and it sounded close, but recently I put it before the distortion (basically like running it before the amp) and it sounds MUCH closer to recordings and such. Mess around with that, you might find it sounds better that way.

    ok thanks guys for the help.

    here is what I am doing and maybe this is wrong.

    My guitar goes to my dunlop wah then to my MXR EVH phase 90 then to the MXR EVH flanger and then to the high input of my 5150 combo.

    is this correct?

    try swapping the flanger and the phaser and see what you get. I swapped mine, and I just like it better now, though it really isnt a big deal

    I go tuner, wah, flanger, phaser, then amp input. I don't think it matters if you have the phaser or flanger first, but try it out, it might make a difference.

    When I was using a distortion box (tonebone hot british) all my pedals were in front of it, then the distortion went into the clean channel. Basically you want only your guitar signal hitting those pedals.

    I use this setup regardless of the amp I'm playing into and it always works. It even works going into my modeller (vox tonelab le), sounds great there too.

    Although you would usually put modulation and time effects in the loop, I have both the EVH Phase and Flange before the input of my amp. I tried them both in loop and felt the effect was way too strong.

    I am not sure if the old Plexi's actually had a loop, meaning Ed would have used these effects up front (The Plexi's probably did not have a loop- although someone on the forum can likely confirm).

    Do not put the flanger in the loop. Don't put the EVH phaser in the loop either. Certainly not on a 5150. They do not sound good in the loop.

    Trying to think of my pedal board. Mine goes....

    Guitar -> Boss NS2 -> EVH Phaser -> EVH Wah -> EVH Flanger -> 5150 Input

    I have all my other pedals in the loop, Boss CH-2, Boss DD-3, MXR Micro Amp (for solos), my tuner, and my BBE.

    Not that big of a fan of the sound, although I am getting used to it. But it looks really cool, and I like the lights so you know when it's on. Actually it's almost too easy to turn on and off. I think the Hendrix one blows it away sound-wise. But like I said it looks cool and I like the lights, so I use it. When we record, I use the Hendrix one though.

    Ed's flanger was actually AFTER the entire amp. As far as I know, Ed had it after his load box, so the signal (simplified) was

    guitar->amp->loadbox->flange->separate poweramp->cab

    That yields a very different tone that I like a lot, but unless you have a complex rig with a load box, it's impossible. For the 5150, putting the flanger in the loop seems to be quieter, and you don't hear the effect 'ghosting' when it's off, but the tone sounds weird. When you put it in front of the amp, it's noisier, it never really seems to go all the way off, but the tone is a little better.
