I'm looking to get some movies on bluray and was wondering if anyone has bought any older movies on bluray and are they any better than DVDs? I love the movie Tombstone and really wanted to buy it on blurau but if its not better than DVD im not.

First off....you have a Bluray player, right?

I've got hundreds of DVD's and will never go back and replace any just for Bluray. But I have started to buy new movies in that format. I don't really notice THAT much of a difference from DVD's, but I'd guess it would strongly depend on your specific variables....Quality of your Bluray player, TV specs, etc.

or a PS3? (what cant they do?)

I agree, its tech going from 720 to 1080, but I do not see enough different to go replacing
many movies. I still get DVDs if its a comedy or something that just doesnt really matter... but something like Avatar, I deff get the bluray.

Like Lode, I buy new movies on Blu Ray. I think they look better, and lots of them sound better, too.

Hear hear! I have a lot of DVDs I'm not going to replace simply because it won't really matter on Blu Ray. Some, however, I have replaced, like my favorite movies and the ones that are visual spectacles and not Michael Bay films.

Visually stunning type flicks are worth it, like Lord Of The Rings or Cast Away or some things like that....but I won't be hunting for Dude Where's My Car on Blu-ray anytime soon.

The difference would probably be slight but noticeable......I'd experiment with a favorite flick that you're really familiar with, so you can notice the subtle differences, I think Tombstone would be a great choice to try it out.

Blu Ray is good - but where you notice the difference is in the sound....so I think you'd need surround sound to truly appreciate it.

That said, I won't upgrade old movies to blu ray if I have them on DVD....I just don't see the value. The only exception MIGHT be Star Wars...we'll see.

AVS Forums has a blu ray review forum. Search it for whatever movie and you find something about it. Like I was gonna upgrade my "Man with No Name" trilogy to blu ray (my fav movies), but many reviews said the blu rays were actually worse than the remaster DVD set I got.

    ps3 is 1080P

if you have HD cable, most of those are 1080i, so bluray will look like watching a movie on a HD cable channel if your tv is only 1080i. if you dont have HD cable, you will see a pretty good difference when you watch your fisrt bluray.
    (dvd being 720 at best)

I got the "Back to the Future" series for my daughter and it does look better than DVD, no question. Overall the Blu-Ray movies look amazing!

Don't DVD players only play 480? I thought a Blu-Ray could upgrade the DVD picture to 720? I don't know about all the upgrade DVD stuff, but the Blu-Ray movies kick ass.

Good question imo. Yes you can, some Blu-Ray players will upgrade the pic to 720 or (HD).

yes, most blurays can play standard DVD (not HD-dvd though)
and most upgrade the picture to 720

alot of DVD players now upgrade to 720 also

A ps3 can play DVD also (not sure if it ups pic to 720, I would think so... the great thing about having a PS3.. it updates via the net.. so its always compaitble with most everything and plays bluray DVD CD)
