Default GPA 1.2... Honk if I need education

We've all felt this kind of desperation, but as funny as this seems, I fell kind of sorry for the kid....and the mom. I know I've said and done things I wasn't proud of because the frustration just got to be too much

Florida mom Ronda Holder uses humiliation to get teen son James Mond III to do better in school

    BY MICHAEL SHERIDAN
    DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

A frustrated mother in Florida is using some tough love to push her teenage son to get better grades.

Ronda Holder forced her son, James Mond III, to stand on a Tampa Bay street corner with a sign stating:

"I DID 4 Questions on my F-Cat AND Said I Wasn't Going to Do it!" said the sign, written in black marker on a large piece of paper hanging around the 15-year-old's neck. "GPA 1.22... Honk if I NEED [an] Education."

The 33-year-old mother said she wanted to embarrass her child into taking his education seriously.

"You take the phone. You take things from them... It don't work," Holder told Fox 13 News in Tampa Bay. "So embarrassing is the best thing. He don't like to get embarrassed."

She plans to make him continue standing on the corner every day until his grades improve.

"Until he straightens up his grades and gets his education on track, he's going to work this corner," Holder said.

The hair stylist and niece of a former Tampa Bay police chief didn't finish high school herself, and neither did the teen's father, James Mond Jr. But both parents were angry that no matter how hard they tried, James Mond III wouldn't put in the effort.

"He'd tell us, 'That school doesn't give homework' or 'That teacher has a problem with me,'" James Mond Jr. told the St. Petersburg Times. "He just sat there looking up at the roof like he wasn't listening."

Not everyone thinks Holder's harsh stance with her son is a good idea.

"Embarrassment and shame is not really healthy for a young person's mind growing up," psychologist Stacey Scheckner told Fox 13 News.

For Holder, she just wants her kid to get an education so he can get a job and have a shot at a real future.

"I don't want any of my kids to stand by the side of the road asking for change," Holder told the St. Petersburg Times.

She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.

That FCAT is the worst damn thing to ever happen to education. If your kid isn't doing well in school find out why and help out. Some kids require different kinds of teaching. I know I would never have graduated high school on time without a program we had that allowed us to go intern out at the Air Force base here. I've always been the kind of person who learned better through doing that sitting there listening to someone talk about it. Is the kid just plain a f#$%^up, maybe, but then again maybe a different approach should be discuessed with the guidance couselor.

Yup, FCAT has fucked up schools...its hyped so much that teachers spend a good deal of their time just to prepare the students for that test, where the time could be spent actually teaching the children stuff they NEED to know.

At least give her credit that she is taking an interest and trying to instill in her child how important education is even if she is a bit misguided. Hopefully, someone will read the story and try to help her out in a better way to encourage her son to take his education seriously.

I actually feel sorry for her. It's not the best solution but if she has had a limited education, she's probably doing her best. Look at how many parents just don't give a damn.
Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance.

Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.

Indeed. Although one could argue that its comparing apples to oranges because it was a different era, my father came from a home where his father left, and had to quit school early on to help support his mom and sister...this same man made choices through his life that eventually led him to be the president of two banks at the same time.

    Excellent point.

I think the idea stinks but her heart is in the right place. Which is more than can be said for many parents nowadays.

Exactly, we have many parents who actually encourage their children to do badly so they will keep getting their "crazy checks". It's appalling!

She wants better for her son like any sane mother does. I say kudos to her but she should look into after school tutoring. Many schools have this free of charge. I hope it works out for them but I read a "blurb" today that CPS has visited her over this. I hope she sticks to her guns. She's not abusing him for goodness sake just trying to teach him a little pride in himself. I find it hard to find fault with that.
