    Rock of Ages: Musical

So when I turned 40, my cousin gave me like some really, really good tickets for this musical at the Pantages here in LA for my birthday. We were like 10 rows back in the center, really good seats.

I really had no idea what it was, I had heard about it, but I really had no idea what it was exactly. And I hate musicals, I mean H-A-T-E them with a passion. In fact I don't even like sitting through plays period, they bore the shit out of me. So needless to say I wasn't all that excited about spending a Saturday afternoon at the theater. And of course it was pouring rain in LA yesterday which makes our traffic 10000000x worse than normal.

But my wife and I actually liked it. You walk in and they're playing 80's metal over the PA before the show starts so that was a good sign. Not too many times do you walk into a theater and hear Skid Row over the PA. That homo Constantine from American Idol fame is the star, and he's actually pretty good, and sings a lot better than I remember. It's actually pretty funny and if you grew up in the 80's listening to hair metal and stuff like that, you'll really like it. Supposed to take place on the Sunset Strip in the 80's, and uses a lot of the 80's LA cliches, so it's funny. I know it's the first time I've ever sat in a theater and known EVERY song in a show, so that was a nice change. And you'll know them all too. And it's funny how they do some of them, there's a lot of humor in it, a lot of breaking the fourth wall, it's very well done.

The musicians who play the stuff are very good. They look like a heavy metal band standing on stage backing everything, it's cool. The lead guitarist was excellent. There's no cheesy orchestration or anything, it's like an 80's rock band playing, obviously with some dramatics added to it on the songs, and some dancing.

I don't know if anyone else has seen it. It was on Broadway first of course, just came out to LA I guess. Anyway I liked it, so I recommend it if you haven't seen it. And like I said I HATE musicals. And they was a huge, long ass standing ovation at the end, people were going nuts. I was really surprised.

    That is all.

If it's as good as you say it is, then that TV commercial of theirs is not doing them a service. Makes me turn the channel every time.

I haven't seen the commercials. But I can imagine they could make it look bad. It isn't. And honestly it's not even cheesy...it's cheesy in an 80's hair metal way. But the production itself is not cheesy.

Once you see the commercial, you'll be glad to didn't see it before going. Trust me, it completely turned me off. Looked like "Glee" with older cats.

Must've been a money hog to get made with all the licensing that had to be paid for. What bands got represented? I'm thinking by the title that Def Lep must've been in the mix somewhere.

I've never seen Glee, but I don't believe this is like that, at all.

Nope no DL, couldnt get the rights, kinda strange. The play the song over the PA when you're walking out though. Stuff like Poison, Warrant, Styx, Journey, DLR (yes they do Just Like Paradise), Whitesnake, Bon Jovi, Foreigner, (there's some non-hair metal and just 80's stuff), REO Gaywagon (like one song but it's funny). There's others I just can't remember.

I seen this show in New York last summer! My wife surspised me with trip there for my bday. I not a 'play' kinda guy but we got tix for the show. At first I thought it was a "def Leppard" tribute thing by the name but read great reviews prior to the show with basic info.

We loved that show. It was much better that I thought. Oddly enough Constantine took the day off, but the guy that did that role was good. The band killed and lead guitarist was Joel Hoekstra (Nightranger, etc) He smoked and I loved his tone. Awesome show. Funny, witty and well done. Would definately see again.

Tom Cruise To Star in 'Rock Of Ages' Film

    from billboard.com:

Tom Cruise will soon be belting some classic rock staples as the star of "Rock of Ages," an upcoming film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical which showcases popular rock songs from the 70s and 80s.

According to NME, the actor will star as Stacee Jaxx, an aging musician whose glory days are long past, in the movie version of the stage production. Among the tunes Cruise will perform include Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive" and Styx's "Renegade."

"I think we're going to see him every drop the rock'n'roll god," says director Adam Shankman, who also helmed 2007 movie musical "Hairspray." "He's pouring himself in this part in a way I've never had an actor do. It's pretty intense."

Anne Hathaway is rumored to be vying for the role of Sherrie, who sings a duet of Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is" with Cruise's character. Other performers rumored to take part in the adaptation, which is scheduled to begin filming in May, include Russell Brand, Taylor Swift and Alec Baldwin.

Yeah, You know.... once in a blue moon, a broadway show comes along that is fresh and gets a huge following from ticket buyers "outside the box" They put asses in seats consistently, selling out often and getting rave reviews from avid broadway folk to the common Joe. I can tell you that last summer in New York this WAS the the buzz!! This show is..(maybe was) a jem to a typical person growing up with 80's rock. This is one of those shows that has bridged gaps from " the typical broadway musical" to "80's rock" and just watching an entertaining live rock production that was produced well in all aspects was refreshing....

I just hope Hollywood doesn't "Grease" this up...

I saw it in October here in Boston with my wife on our anniversary. We had a blast, it was terrific. We both agreed it was something we wouldn't mind seeing again. Very funny, even when it was predictable.

The Coverdale intro is just friggin classic.

I thought for sure this was about def lep. Sounds like I might have to check it out. Well if it ever shows up in NV which is highly unlikely.

Not sure about the Cruise thing though. I still haven't forgiven him for Legend.

saw it - didn't like it. Thought it was WAY over the top cheesy and that the story sucked. Everyone one else in the theatre seemed to enjoy it though.
