Default 3.5 Magnitude Earthquake Off the Coast of Alabama

Epicenter is less than 10 miles off the coast of Baldwin County in the Gulf of Mexico
GULF SHORES, Alabama - The United States Geological Survey confirms a 3.5 magnitude earthquake in the Gulf of Mexico.

It happened at 5:15 p.m. at coordinates 30.180°N, 87.848°W, about 10 miles off the coast, just west of the Gulf State Park.

News 5 first heard from a man on Dauphin Island who says his home, which is on pilings, swayed back and forth for at least five seconds. We also received a call from a woman in Orange Beach who also felt the shaking in her second floor condo.

Dauphin Island Police tell News 5 they immediately received around 50 calls from people who say they felt the earth shake. Some people say it was strong enough for dishes to fall out of cabinets. At this point, there are no reports of injuries.

The USGS says people have reported feeling the quake as far away as Birmingham.

I thought same. Doesn't seem like anything in and of itself, but this got me looking at if there's been increased quake activity in the area lately > http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquak...quakes_all.php.

Looking at quakes in the past 7 days I noticed that though this is the only quake in Alabama recently there's actually been many considerable quakes in Arkansas the past few days, and turns out is something that's been going on there with greater frequency for a few years. They call it the Guy Earthquake Swarm.
Reminded me about dangerous methods of drilling for natural gas called Hydro-Fracture drilling that is known to cause earthquakes. Caused quakes in Colorado before.

Arkansas Is Shaking: 50+ Earthquakes In Past Week; 700+ In Last Six Months
There was a 3.2-magnitude earthquake at 6:18 a.m. local time this morning near Greenbrier, Ark., the U.S. Geological Survey reports. That's in the north central part of the state.

But that's hardly the whole story.

Since Sunday, USGS says, there have been more than 50 earthquakes in that area. And, local station KATV reported yesterday, there have been more than 700 in the past six months.

    The Associated Press reports that:

"Scott Ausbrooks, geohazards supervisor for the Arkansas Geological Survey, said the quakes are part of what is now called the Guy earthquake swarm — a series of mild earthquakes that have been occurring periodically since 2009. A similar swarm occurred in the early 1980s when a series of quakes hit Enola, Ark.

"Ausbrooks said geologists are still trying to discover the exact cause of the recent seismic activity but have identified two possibilities.

" 'It could just be a naturally occurring swarm like the Enola swarm,

or it could be related to ongoing natural gas exploration in the area,' he said."

I seem to recall seeing something on the history channel a few years ago about a earthquake in the 1800s(1811 I believe) that happened in Missouri that actually changed the directional flow of parts of the Mississipi River. I also recall hearing that Memphis sits on a major faultline as well, so the southeast is no stranger to earthquakes, obviously nothing anywhere near as powerful as California, but we do get them down here.
