Default Museum Devoted to 8-Track Tapes Opens

Before CDs, MP3s and even cassette tapes, there were 8-tracks. And one Dallas man is making it his life's mission to make sure we never forget them by opening up the first ever Eight Track Museum.

Music historian Bucks Burnett did not start collecting the now-obsolete 8-track music format until it was almost too late, AOL News reported. Always a music collector, Burnett began collecting the portable music format in 1988, the last year they were made available, when he decided to purchase The Beatles' white album, according to The Dallas Observer .

For Burnett though, it was not so much about the music that he began his collection of 8-tracks, but it was the cartridges in which they came in. He said they are colorful and that you can even tell what era it came from by the color, AOL News reported.

The one Beatles' 8-track has now turned into around 3,000 and will be on display, starting tonight, at the Eight Track Museum's grand opening.

Visitors will not only see 8-tracks aplenty, but Burnett will also have other musical formats from years gone by, including: Thomas Edison's original wax cylinders, shellac 78 rpm records, vinyl LPs, 45s and cassette tapes.

If you ask Burnett why he is so passionate about 8-tracks, he will tell you that it is not just about the object, but history.

"This isn't so much about eight-tracks. This isn't so much about dead formats. This isn't even about all formats. It's, for me, about physical formats. Are we going to just throw away our history," he explains to The Dallas Observer.

If you are in the Dallas area and would like to attend the grand opening, admission is $20 at the door. But don't go expecting to be able to listen to Burnett's beloved 8-tracks. They are for viewing pleasure only.

Burnett told AOL News, "I am focusing on the cartridges themselves as visual objects. If you want the music, listen to a CD or MP3. When you see an exhibit on ancient Egypt, you don't get to pick up an Egyptian spoon."

    $20? To look at 8-tracks?

I didn't realise that 8-tracks were still made up to '88 - wonder what some of the last ones made were (not counting the ones that were made in recent years for collectors items)?

I had a 74 Firebird with a mean 8 track player. I had an 8 track recorder too that I got from Radio Shack to record them off the FM.

When I started driving, I got in the habit of buying new albums on both vinyl and cassette, just so I could listen to the music on my way home.

With me it was a '68 GTO 400 / 4 speed that I bought in 1980 with an 8 track player. A friend of mine had a '73 Firebird Formula 350 also with an 8 track player. Like the guy in the article who opened the museum, my first 8 track was The Beatles' White Album. The I bought some POS Air Supply album on 8 track because a girl I was dating liked that band. She ended up not being worth the price of that tape. Those were the only two I ever bought (have 'em somewhere) and then I went really high tech and bought one of those adapters that held a cassette tape and you slid it into the 8 track player.
