Default "Frank 2" goes to Smithsonian

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History has recently acquired the Van Halen “Frank 2” guitar played and made famous by Eddie Van Halen through a partnership donation with Fender Musical Instruments. It was made in 2006 as part of a joint venture between the artist and Fender to produce a limited edition number of guitars for the EVH Brand. Known as the “Frankenstein Replica,” or “Frank 2,” it will be part of the museum’s Division of Culture and the Arts, which preserves a large and diverse collection of instruments.

Edward “Eddie” Van Halen (b. Jan. 26, 1955) is a Dutch-American guitarist, keyboardist, songwriter, producer and self-taught inventor of guitar technology and technique. He is best known as the lead guitarist and co-founder of the hard-rock band Van Halen and recognized for his innovative performing and recording styles in blues-based rock, tapping, intense solos and high-frequency feedback; he is also famous for energetic and acrobatic stage performances. The band’s self-titled debut album was released Feb. 10, 1978.

“The museum collects objects that are multidimensional, and this guitar reflects innovation, talent and influence,” said Brent D. Glass, director of the museum. “The guitar moves the museum’s instrument collections into more contemporary history.”

In 1975 Eddie Van Halen realized that no existing guitar had the features that he needed to create his signature sound. A constant tinkerer, he set out to construct a guitar to fit his standards, needs and playing style, combining different elements of long-established guitar designs into one instrument. Fans nicknamed the custom creation “Frankenstein.” By 2006, the original “Frankenstein” guitar had been in service for more than 30 years and was retired from performances. Chip Ellis, a master guitar builder at Fender, replicated every detail of the original guitar, which, when presented to Eddie Van Halen, appeared to be indistinguishable from the original. During the Van Halen 2007-08 North American tour with original lead singer David Lee Roth, Eddie Van Halen used the replica guitar, “Frank 2” for the majority of the performances.

Just saw this story on the local Philly news channel 6 so it must be making the rounds on the news wire. Not sure I agree with the last sentence though since to my knowledge he did not use this "Frank 2" for the majority of the performances during the last tour. He might have had better overall tone if he had used it more often. I saw Philly on the first leg and Hershey on the last leg, and when they had Little Guitars in the set I thought I read he was playing a mini-Frankie for that song. He has a smaller build so it looked like a normal sized guitar on him. Then there were the Charvel Art Series guitars which he signed and auctioned off after each show.

I think he stopped using the Franky after the break they had. He mainly used it for Jump.
If you have nothing nice to say about Eddie Van Halen, you're at the right website. - Me (A few years ago)

"People take Van Halen much more seriously than we do" - David Lee Roth (1980's)

"I don't sit on the end of your bed while you're trying to make a living" - David Lee Roth (1988)

"For some reason people love to complain about everything. The internet has made it easy for people to do that. Shut the fuck up and get a life, or show me how good you can do it."- Edward Van Halen

"A lot of people ask me which Van Halen singer was better. You can't compare them. It's like asking which guitarist is better. Nobody is better than anybody. Every player is their own person."-Edward Van Halen

"I do like Eddie Van Halen as a player. He gets it right quite often." -Paul McCartney

Damn if you're not right on that. I should have remembered since I was at the 10/1 Philly show. I just watched some vids and he was using it for Jump. Didn't help his tone though, still the nasal half-cocked wah tone and he even engaged the wah more fully a few times during the last chords. His guitar was also flat compared to the keyboard track, but that's no surprise either. It was out of sync with the keyboard track even worse on other nights. Still, all in all good memories from those shows. If anything actually materializes from these current VH efforts I hope that you guys in Oz get to see them perform live.

Yep, and I wonder why he didn't just use the mini-Les Paul from the old days rather than Chip going through the effort of making a mini-Frankie. Still, it was cool to have this song in the set list and if they're ever out again I hope it returns.

I always thought that new mini-frankie was still too close in size compared to his normal frankie. He should have made it actually little like his mini-les paul. People probably didn't even realize that guitar was smaller.

probably because he's pimping the striped aesthetic and he's married to fender right now.
    Stay out of it, dude.

You know you're probably right. In light of his current association with Fender, it wouldn't have looked very good if he had a mini-Les Paul replica made just to play during Little Guitars. Maybe Fender could have made those replicas and charged $5K for them. Didn't Gibson actually make the Hendrix Signature Strat a year or two ago? What a crazy mixed up world we live in...
