Default Welcome to the future of newspapers, magazines, books, and textbooks

Apple and Rupert Murdoch introduce "The Daily""

I have been reading about the progress of this, ironically, in print editions of the LATimes for some time now. I really think that, even though the Kindle is cool, this will be the future for magazines, newspapers, textbooks, and books.

I've been following this as well. I think it will definitely replace newspapers eliminating printing and delivery expenses.....in a way, it will be a return to how papers used to be published ....morning editions, afternoon and "final" or evening editions...without the expense.

People will be able to get their news in a print form where every they are..with attached videos.....which I would like much more than CNN etc...I can read what article I want, when I want without waiting for half an hour while they give me national weather etc

most Textbooks will be able to be produced less expensively and updated constantly...no more schools with history books that stop at 1970

magazines....the color versions of these readers are fantastic for this purpose...and no magazines to recycle!

books, I'm not so sure about.....I wanted to buy one of my nephews a Kindle or Nook for Christmas...he didn't want one, and neither do I

there is just something about having shelves of books in your library that is satisfying

and I wouldn't take one of these to the beach

but for junk reading on the treadmill.....perfect!

I love my Nook. Reading on an lcd is tough. If I'm on the internet, I deal with it. But reading for hours on an lcd bothers my eyes too much. I really like the E-ink format. The nook color was out (LCD), but I got the E-ink one.

I do think I'll get a tablet at some point, not sure if I'll use it as a reader though.

The thing that's always annoyed me about print news is not so much the
medium itself, which I love (ie. books/magazines, etc.) but the they way
the medium was executed. Yeah, I know newspaper page size/layout is
all in how to reduce/maximize printing cost/functionality, but it's always
been damned impractical, in a way, especially outside on a windy day.
    Trivial perhaps, but still...

I think print form has been on it's last legs since the internet went public back in the '90's.

I bought a kindle a few months back because I spend a lot of time on trains going to various companies. Whilst I will always prefer the real thing, it is great to be able to carry a couple of heavy dictionaries and other work related books in such a format.

I've only bought one real reading type book in digital format though. I was on a longish train ride and fancied something to occupy the time. It was a strange feeling to go onto the kindle store and two minutes later be reading the Anthony Keidis autobiography I had downloaded.

Still, however impractical it may be, I love having shelves full of books in my house.

I like to read the news online, but like you, I still prefer books, and even certain magazines. If I'm going to read Cigar Aficionado, or Architectural Digest, or something of that nature, I want the real magazine.

The thought of those portable readers seems like a neat idea - but I feel I'd go blind if I stared at a video screen any more than I do now.

That's how I felt until I saw the Kindle at an office supply store the other day. The Wife has been interested in them for a while. The screen honest-to-god looks like a page in a book. It wasn't anything like looking at the screen of a monitor, tablet, cel phone or anything else. It looked like a sheet of paper.

    Pretty freakin' cool.
    Stay out of it, dude.

I love the E-ink format the Kindle and Nook use, I couldn't stare at an LCD long enough to read a book. I didn't like the Kindle just because it will only read books from Amazon. I like the Nook because it will read epub which you can get at the library, google books, etc. I've got a collection of William Faulkner short stories from the Library of Congress I got for free in epub that I've spent many, many hours with, couldn't work on Kindle.

Course you can check this out if you have a Kindle, or any ereader to change formats and get rid of that pesky DRM.

I'm having a blast with my Kindle. Doesn't hurt the eyes at all.

Community journalism is a long, long way from extinction in print. Your 5-25K circulation papers aren't going anywhere. It's the larger metro dailies that are about to join the dinosaurs.

I'm not personally a fan of e-readers. Nothing against them, really. I just like the feel of a hardback book in my hands. There's something very personal about it.
