Default Marching to Mars Poor Album Sales

I was out of the country during late nineties and the time that MTM was released. I know that Grunge was still there and the Blink 182 type crap was on the way but was that the only reason that it sold so poorly? It seems with Sammy’s first post-VH would create interest and Little White Lie was a good first single to release, you’d think it would at least go Gold.

Were there really less than 500,000 people in the country who would support a solo Sammy album only 2 years after Balance?

His single was "Little White Lie" - but when in VH, his singles were "When It's Love," "Why Can't This Be Love," "I Can't Stop Loving You," etc. So really MTM was LESS commercial than what he did with VH. He made a choice, if he had wanted to, he could've written something more commercial and sold more records.

Quite honestly in the mid '90s was there anyone from the '70s/'80s tearing up the charts other than U2? Marching To Mars is a great album, whether it sold 10,000 copies or 10 million. While Hagar leaving was big news, the bigger news was Who's number 3. That and considering Sammy wasn't that huge of a draw on his own before Van Halen(not saying he wasn't a successful artist just saying he wasn't huge)it stands to reason that he wouldn't be after leaving Van Halen.

I saw him on that tour.
That's the only time ive ever seen him solo other than a couple bay area music awards performances in 1994 and 2000.

I actually like it better than a lot of his stuff with Van Halen.

I like pissed off Sam, not lovey dovey Sam.

I don't really care how many it sold, that is a great disc.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

good words daves dreidel, i love his angry side too. his writing is better too. the only odd song on the album for me, is "kama". i know its for his daughter, but i've just never gotten into it...

it had a few things going againts it. first it was released on a small record label-Sam did this on purpose as he could have signed with Warner Bros but chose a smaller company that could concentrate on him more, this came back to bite him in the ass later on.

his video for LWL got NO airplay on MTV which was a big deal back then. I believe he released 3 songs to radio, LWL, MTM and Both Sides Now, BSN was re-edited and almost totally different than the album version. I think they all did well in terms of airplay. Who Has the Right would have been a huge hit had it been released under the VH banner especially since it's such a meaningful song but it was never released. I think at the end of the day it went gold, not sure about that. if it didn't it's really close.

it's funny cause it seemed like Sam always had songs that were decent radio hits but that didn't really generate into big album sales....this was when Napster was 1st out as well, I'm sure that had something to do with it. Sammy actually pre released one of his disks on Napster just to get the music out there (I think it was Ten/13).

lots of things going againts him in terms of album sales at that time.

I'll agree that pissed off Sammy seems to produce better music. (Except for Chickenfoot) My personal favorite off that album was Salvation On Sand Hill.

Sammy gave the album great promotion when he toured here in 1998. He performed "Both sides now" on "Hey hey its saturday", and "Little white lie" on the Bert Newton morning show. Also, Sammy gave one of his best interviews...ever on the Bert Newton show, Sammy gets real deep in it and lets it all out.
He also played "Why cant this be love" on "In melbourne tonight".

" I know what you're thinking: "Do I want to watch Mard? We know that horses were very strong and could actually stop airplanes from flying away. The ones made out of stone called "statues" -- occasionally came to life and rode off is a colonial cliche. How many more times do we need to hear about how the oppressive Raj's wore villainous black capes, crafted cunning plastic masks to impersonate people, and drained all the blood from their slaves so they could keep the fluid in bottles in their dungeons? I mean, YAWN!

But if you're willing to sit through this dry sort of historical drama one more time -- or even just this dry historical review -- you will not be disappointed. In fact, some of you might just learn something they didn't teach you in school!-

welll out of the 3 disks that came out after the 96 fiasco MTM is easily the best one. DLR band has some whicked guitar playing on it but that'a about it. VH3.....I won't go there.

I like almost the whole disk honestly, I don't really have a favorite tune but Warmth of the Womb is way up there, I just think that song totally kicks ass. I remember reading an article where Sammy said he played an early version of that for EVH and Eddie really liked it.

Great tune. It has a very eerie and desperate feel to it.

I think it's a great album but considering that Balance went multi-platinum, it seems a solo effort would at least score Gold status between the Red Heads and interested Van Hagar fans.

MTM was Sammy searching for . . . Bootsey Collins? If I break it out now, it feels like an old pair of tennis shoes - comfortable, but old. Good for a listen, but not a relationship

I heard Marching To Mars and Little White Lie on the radio when it came out. I even saw the Little White Lie video on Much Music when the album came out. So it had some publicity at least.
