    Default Painting My Wolfgang

I'm thinking about painting my USA sp. Paint has plenty of nicks-- its my player. I plan on doing a spray can paint job. Do I need to take all the paint off, or just get the shine off. Its purple, I think I want to go flat black. I've seen some cool flat black guitars, lately.

You can probably get by just sanding off the clearcoat, although I would go all the way down.

I striped my wolfgang special back about 9 years ago and it came out great. It was a black special and all I did was "rough up" the paint job with some sand paper and basically give the primer something to adhere to. That will work for you. It came out so good I wish I never sold it.
but rough up the finish then prime it white with a few coats. After that I am sure you know the process.

The wolfies look cool striped. Good luck,

    Rob

here is how mine came out

I was going to clear coat it but I have always kinda liked Ed's theory of letting the guitar wear and not adding the clear coat. This guitar would certainly look good clear coated though to give it a nice factory finish.

I guess if I was to stripe another Wolfie I would clear coat it.

Looks great! Jimi, as a side note, interesting pic. The 5150 II's with the grills and backer boards removed...I never knew he did that.
Yeah...you can just scuff the paint seeing as it's poly. You only need to worry about reactions when you're painting over evaporative finishes like lacquers. Poly's are a two part catalyst paint which are tough and don't generally react once hardened. Lacquers use acetone and alcohols that will react if those same chemicals are reapplied over top.
I've painted Strats with poly finish numerous times by scuffing the surface with coarse and fine automotive grade Scotchbrite pads, then cleaning the body with PPG Ditzo wax and oil remover. it takes off any fingerprints, or contaminants that affect adhesion. No nasty chipping or flaking, and it saves tons of time in sanding down usually very thick poly finishes.

Ah, yes, Japanese magazines are the ultimate resource when it comes to Ed's guitars... although, Zlozower's new book should contain some great, never before seen shots of Ed's guitars as well!

yup the Jap mags are the best for sure.

I remember years ago I striped a Kramer 1984 replica and then about a year later I picked up a player mag and saw what the back looked like and I was so pissed off I striped it down and repainted it. ha ha.... when I used to build and stripe guitars all the time I constantly used the Jap mags. The best for sure.

yeah I am really looking forward to Zloz's new book. When is it due out again?

Thought i would dig this thread up --- Had the day off, so I started my paint project. Sanded my wolf down through the clear, & started spraying. Its gonna be flat black. so far it looks good. I'll get pics up in a few days.
Also took apart my cheap Epi LP, & dulled the shine down on it. Gonna put Dream 90's back in it.

Luckily, my wire that held the body up came loose, after I finished one of the coats. Picked it up, let it dry, some, sanded the dirt & stuff off, sprayed some more !! Minor setback
