Default Mother Sent to Jail for Seeking a Better Education for Her Children

An Ohio mother of two was sentenced to 10 days in jail and placed on three years probation after sending her kids to a school district in which they did not live. Kelly Williams-Bolar was sentenced by Judge Patricia Cosgrove on Tuesday and will begin serving her sentence immediately.

The jury deliberated for seven hours and the courtroom was packed as the sentence was handed down. She was convicted on two counts of tampering with court records after registering her two girls as living with Williams Bolarís father when they actually lived with her. The family lived in the housing projects in Akron, Ohio, and the fatherís address was in nearby Copley Township.

Additionally, Williams-Bolarís father, Edward L. Williams, was charged with a fourth-degree felony of grand theft, in which he and his daughter are charged with defrauding the school system for two years of educational services for their girls. The court determined that sending their children to the wrong school was worth $30,500 in tuition.

So the court needs to explain to everyone how the property taxes or "cost" for sending a child in that district is 30K more than in the poorer districts. Are the courts admitting that it costs that much less to educate a poor child?? I would also like to know how many other parents have been sent to jail for this.

I'm not saying what she did was right and shouldn't have to pay the offset in costs for sending your child to a better school, but 30K?? and jail time??
Are we actually robbing poor black mothers of their economic opportunities? Or shall we continue to blame them for their woes??

that poor black lady had no right sending her poor black child to that other school. She should have stayed where she belongs, in the poor black neighbourhood.

That school exists so that rich white people can get away from the poor black people and the last thing they need or want is to have some poor black kid coming in and screwing it all...because you know how it is, once one shows up, they all show up.

There now. I think I covered that part rather well for anyone interested in "going there."

I would actually vote and perhaps even get involved in a campaign for someone running on a platform that including banning the use of property taxes to fund the specific schools of any given area and whose driving ambition was to make sure that every public school, from the poor side of town to the rich part of town had the same financial resources.

The best part of the article is the bit where they are being charged with "grand theft" because they STOLE two years of education from that school. classic.

    Do her daughters play football?

This shit happens all the time here in the good ol' state of Oklahoma. Top notch high school football players who live in a district that doesn't have a good football program 'moving' to a district that does. Only they don't really 'move'.

If the girls can ball, this will all go away.

I knew plenty of kids when I was in school that didn't go where they were supposed to go to school...but none of them had parents who went to the extreme of tampering with court records, they usually simply gave a friend or family member's address when they registered the child and that was it. Some got caught, some didn't.

As for the monetary judgement...ummm, yeah...right.

Happens a lot in my city. I have a sister in law who works for the board of Ed that has told me plenty of stories about families that do this. Some get caught, most don't.

Ohio has the dubious distinction of having some of the worst school buildings in the nation. about 10-15 years ago, our own State Supreme Court declared the way Ohio schools are funded unconstitutional and over rely upon property taxes. Some efforts have been made to tear down decaying schools and rebuild them...Toledo for example is in the process of completely overhauling their buildings....much to the consternation of some of the poorer districts who are finding their schools shut down in consolidations.

The Supreme court ordered as recently as 2002 that the state narrow the funding gap between the poorest and richest districts, but little has been done, in fact, after increases in funding after the first few court rulings, state funding began to decline again.

Had this woman had a more aggressive attorney, I would have imagined that they could have argued that since the school funding is STILL unconstitutional, she had a right to defend her childrens rights.

There is a HUGE problem with inner-city schools!! It's no surprise there is no hope or sense of pride within these communities, when there is nothing to aspire to. You can't subject someone to what will be an 8th grade education, when or if they graduate High School and expect too much from them. It is a vicious cycle and it needs to be addressed because this is where the problem starts.

We just had a similar situation here. A school partially run by the University of Northern Iowa, Price Lab had a bunch of parents get nailed for the same thing as the lady in the above story.

Some parents said that the director of the school suggested to use a false address (use a friend or family member that lived in the district) to enroll their kids.

Here's a link to a bunch of stories about the situation. Feel free to peruse at your leisure.

    http://wcfcourier.com/search/topic/?k=%22price lab%22&d1=&d2=&s=start_time&sd=desc&l=50&f=html&sF orm=false&sHeading=Price Lab

So far, of the 7 parents charged, 3 have been found guilty, 2 not guilty.

Here's a link to the school itself.

rather easily. Put all the tax money earmarked for education (in Texas it's a small portion of the overall budget plus the majority of money brought in from the state lottery and alcohol and tobacco sales) in a pot and distribute it equally among the schools and ensure that what each school needs is budgetted going forward.

Education should be one of THE absolute most basic and highly prioritized responsibilities of a civilized society.

Otherwise, don't fucking provide public education. Privatize it all and make people pay for K-12 for the kids.

equal funding is a nice idea but it assumes that govt cares the same amount for all kids. This is not true it would appear.
