    Default Guitar Fretwork Question

My beloved 1998 Peavey Wolfgang ( my main gigging ax for 13 years ) needs fretwork. Worn down, dinged, ruts...you name it, it's got it. I've abused this guitar badly.

So I ordered a new Fender EVH Wolfgang special and it will be here tomorrow.

I've never had guitar fretwork done. Usually just thow guitars in the boneyard when they get old.

What are the right questions to ask when I find someone that does fretwork? I don't want to turn my Peavey Wolfgang over to someone that ruins it cause they don't know what they are doing.

    Thanks

How bad your frets are will depend on the question you wanna ask. The wolfgangs have 6105 size fretwire (tall/skinny).

There is a good chance that you can just get the frets leveled/crowned. That is when they reshape the fret removing wear/dents/etc. Wolfgang fretwire is tall so plenty of life before refret.

If you do need a refret go to someone reputable. They will need to remove all the frets nicely to prevent damage to the fretboard. I personally have never heard of someone needing a refret on a wolfgang due to playing. Plenty of life there.

Good luck! And take better care of your Wolf!

I do not know what state you are in so that would help on references as dtuner is in California and I am in NY and others are spread out so I think we can get you someone for the job. If you are in NY or the east coast Mat Brewster who owns 30th ST Guitars is as good as it gets. But as Mike stated first see if you need them dressed first as a re-fret is going to cost. But I would deffinetly go with a refret before even thinking of getting a new neck since you have molded and shaped that neck to feel like home to your hands. I last had Mat so a refret on a Tele for me 8 years ago and it was $300 so I would guess now it would be at least $400, but the guitar was better than when it came from the factory.

If it's just player's wear, a guitar should never have to get thrown in the "boneyard." They aren't cars.

You can usually get one or two fret levels out of the Wolfgang frets before they need to be replaced.

......and if you DO need new frets, you need official Dunlop 6105s for Peavey's Wolfgang.

NOT anything sold by anyone else that says "6105"....they WON'T be the same HEIGHT!

    DUNLOP on the bag!!!

Default EVH USA WOLFGANG Neck question

Hey Guys I'm new here, and I can't seen to be able to start a thread so I'll try a reply for my question. I just got a USA EVH Wolfgang Lefty! My question is what if any oil or whatever do they put on the fretboard? I played mine right out of the box for about 25 min and There were already darker spots on the neck, and my figers were a little dark. I was just wondering what they put on the neck at the factory? If anyone could help me out I would appreciate it.
    Thanks so much!

They do literally treat the neck with gunstock oil, wax, and a conditioning lubricant like lemon oil or bore oil. Gunstock oil (which really isn't oil based at all) is a finish and not something you need to do. Clean the neck with a light brush and Murphy's Oil Soap during string changes and follow it with a light coat of lemon oil. That will keep it cleaned and conditioned. The dirty spots are just a matter-of-fact on a minimally finished neck like the Wolfgang's. If you do the above they will be minimal.
