    Default Keith Olbermann fired

Keith Olbermann abruptly fired by NBC

Keith Olbermann, the controversial MSNBC cable news host, has his contract abruptly terminated by parent company NBC
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/richard-adams-blog

Keith Olbermann, the liberal, outspoken anchor of MSNBC's Countdown show, had his contract dramatically terminated by the US cable new network's parent company NBC on Friday night.

Abruptly announcing that the current show would be his last, Olbermann calmly read aloud a poem by James Thurber before signing off with the words: "Good night and good luck."

While Olbermann was live on-air, NBC issued a statement reading:

    Statement regarding Keith Olbermann

MSNBC and Keith Olbermann have ended their contract. The last broadcast of Countdown with Keith Olbermann will be this evening. MSNBC thanks Keith for his integral role in MSNBC's success and we wish him well in his future endeavors.

The Associated Press reported that Phil Griffin, MSNBC's president, would not comment on Olbermann's exit. But a spokesman did say that the acquistion of NBC Universal by Comcast, which received regulatory approval this week, had nothing to do with the decision.

Bizarrely, nearly half an hour later during an ad break in the following program, MSNBC showed a station promo featuring Olbermann. But the promo was interrupted halfway through by a mattress advertisement.

Olbermann had been suspended from hosting his daily 8pm show by the network in November last year for making donations to three Democratic candidates but was reinstated the following week.

Olbermann's show Countdown, which screened at 8pm and repeated at 10pm, was the network's top-rated programme. On Thursday the show attracted 1.1 million viewers, according to Nielsen ratings, far ahead of CNN's Parker-Spitzer, which managed just 520,000 in the same time slot. Fox News's Bill O'Reilly – a frequent target of Olbermann's ire – dominated the hour with 2.9 million viewers.

Let's face it: People are finally starting to wake up from their slumber and they weren't watching him. A show about watching clothes dry would probably attract more viewers.

I'll always remember him as the sports guy on KTLA here in Southern California. Growing up, I watched him all the time. I just read up on him at ESPN and I didn't realize he left under such bad terms. Apparently, he's banned from the ESPN campus in Bristol. Wow.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

Even if I agreed with him politically, I couldn't get past what a pretentious prick KO is. I've never seen such an unlikable TV personality.

I think Fox will offer him a job immediately, since they are "fair and balanced." No?

I disagree, Bill O has some pretty solid facts and is a smart guy. Plus he is very charitible to AMERICAN causes.

I'd much rather see Hannity or Beck abrubtly disappear from the face of television and radio. They are Fox News' version of Olberman.

Thank God. While I disagree with Rachael Meadow, at least she comes across as informative, intelligent and polite. While I know that people hate on O'Reilly, the guy at least has the balls to go on shows where he knows he is hated upon. For instance The Daily Show, David Letterman and the View. I have yet to see Olbermann stick his neck out, outside the cozy confines of MSNBC.

Olbermann always came across very jealous of O'Reilly's success. I mean he reminded me a bit of Opie and Anthony were/are of Stern in his heyday.

FOX should treat this like the Cold War spy swaps. Maybe give up a Beck or Hannity as a goodwill gesture. Heck why stop there. Lets have Palin retire and in return the Democrats will give up Pelosi.

In TV land if no one watches your gone. Fact is people watch Fox not MSNBC. If you like Olberman don't worry he will return to the tube or dial probably in sports again.
