    Default Vegas!!!

I'll be going to Vegas next month for a seminar at work. Being that I've never been, I'm looking for suggestions/things to do while in town. Obviously I'll hit Caob Wabo. Any other suggestions? First off I'm not big on the whole bar scene, so that's out (apart from CW). Thanks for any insight/advice.

You might want to check out the Blue Man Group show; pretty trippy, percussive musical performance art/theatre. Also make sure to visit the Hard Rock Hotel and check out all the memorabilia including Alex's kit from the F.U.C.K. tour.

I've become quite the Vegas traveler recently. It helps to live less than 2.5 hours away. Anyway, the CW Cantina is pretty cool. They play good music (last time I was in there they even played a mash up of Muse's "Starlight" and The Killers' "When You Were Young" that's not even commercially available or an official release, so apparently bootlegs are something they play too), have good chips and salsa, and there are lots of fun pictures of Sammy. Drinks are expensive, but ya gotta have a Waborita while there, right? I highly, highly, highly recommend the Beef Fajita Burrito. One of the best restaurant burritos I have ever had.

Anyway, they say that the highest grossing restaurant in the country is Buffet's Margaritaville, also on the strip. I have been there. The food isn't anything amazing, but come one--ya gotta have a Cheeseburger in Paradise and a Margarita there, right?

Steel Panther plays almost every Friday night at the House of blues in Mandalay Bay and the Green Valley Ranch every Saturday night. I have yet to go, but if you're a VH fan, I'd imagine you'd have fun.

Beatles' Love and Phantom are great shows, but pricey. So is Lion King, but also great. I hear Leno's shows are a lot funnier than he is on the Tonight Show. Zumanity at the NYNY is an adult-themed Cirque de Soleil. Definitely adult themes and nudity. If you're not shy, it's funny and well-done. Usually the tickets are pretty cheap if you're on a budget. Most of the other Cirque shows are significantly more. Vegas.com always either has deals or tickets with no charge for upgrades to the next tier.

If you wanna save a little $ and you plan on drinking (even if you're not big on the bar scene), bring booze with you. This way you can start in the room and just keep your buzz throughout the night. Also, if you're waiting on friends/the better half, one way to get cheap drinks is at the bar top while playing video poker/blackjack. Throw in a $20, play sparingly, order drinks (which are free because you're playing) and make sure you tip a dollar or two per drink. I can usually wast 20-45 minutes, for example, at the bar near the sports book in the Monte Carlo, break even (or even win) and get 4 or 5 drinks.

Finally, you could spend an entire day just going through all the hotels, from Excalibur to the Stratosphere. You could also spend some time downtown at Freemont street. That's pretty fun too. It's also the only place you'll likely find anything under $10 minimum tables.

Best places to maybe see a celebrity: the Palms and the Wynn.

Finally, if you are a seafood lover, do NOT miss the seafood Buffet at the Rio. It's abut $40 per person, but unbelievable. That also reminds me--Penn and Teller are usually at the Rio.

Sit down at a blackjack table wearing shades and an obviously false moustache. As you play, start tapping your leg under the table like you are sending morse code signals. The idea of the game, if you start winning, is to see how long it takes for some security guys to suggest that you leave.

Even better if you have some Chinese pals to hang around near the table.

Being that I know how to count and cheat since I work in surveillance, I think I'll pass. Plus you usually have to have like lots of money in order to do that and I doubt my $100 will worry them.

There's nothing like being at a craps table when someone goes on a sick run. God damn is it an adrenaline rush.

it really does depend on the amount of time you have available to you. If you have big chunks of two days, the thing i like to do (with rookies to vegas) is just take on side of the strip a day. So if you're in the middle of the strip (Paris/Bally/Bellagio/Caeasrs) do the south end one day and the north the other - basically walking south on end and walking back north on the other (and vice versa). If you're at end of the strip - cab it to other side and walk up the east side one day and the west the other. Almost every hotel has got great stuff to see - some of it free, some cheap, some expensive.

Vegas.com has a nice guide on attractions if you want to check them out - it really depends on what you're into. If you're a car buff - there's a few cool things to check out (imperial palace auto show, caesars and the wynn both got high end stuff to check out as well). If you're into shows, there's so many that it's insane to even try to give you a list.

But every person is gonna get something different out of the city. I've been there 10+ times and haven't seen everything. It really is an amazing city.

    10 times?? Wow.

Yes, it's an amazing city. I've been there twice, both times with a group of buddies. I don't know what it's like to go with a girlfriend or wife, but if you're with your buddies you absolutely do not need more than a Fri/Sat/Sun. By the time Sunday morning rolls around you're running on fucking fumes and dreading the flight home.

There's now a Hard Rock Cafe right on Las Vegas Blvd. There was a black and white-striped EVH guitar upstairs when I ate there last year.
