Default Boston debuts ambulance for obese patients

BOSTON (Reuters Life!) Boston emergency services debuted a specialized ambulance designed to carry obese patients on Tuesday, and the retrofitted vehicle was promptly needed on two calls, authorities said.

    http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE70A6KF20110111

The ambulance is equipped with a special stretcher that can hold 850 pounds and a hydraulic lift with a 1,000 pound capacity, said Captain Jose Archila of Boston's Emergency Medical Services fleet.

The ambulance is likely to be needed two to four times a week, he said.

"We have seen a huge increase in the last six months," said Archila about the number of calls by obese patients.

Tuesday's two runs were not likely to be the norm, he explained, adding the ambulance was designed for the safety of patients and the crews helping them.

About one third of adults in the United States are obese, including 33.3 percent of men and 35.3 percent of women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, citing 2005-2006 figures.

Back injuries among crews are common due to strain from lifting extremely heavy patients, he said. The ambulance makes the patients more comfortable as well.

In appearance, the ambulance looks like any other. The hydraulic lift is folded and stowed underneath the bed, and a gas tank was repositioned to accommodate it, Archila said.

Wow! 2-4 times a week. People in Boston really need to exercise more.

remember when the only difference between an ambulance and a hearse was that one was black and the other was white?

I was just talking about this kind of thing with my sister in law...she works in a surgery and they are seeing many more children who are grossly obese...like adolescents who are so overweight that their leg bones are bowing and they need orthopedic surgery to correct the deformities

    now that is sad

She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.

Maybe it would have a greater impact if flat-bed trucks were used...kinda give people an incentive to lose a few pounds. Now you get people sitting around thinking, "Excellent! Now when I have my stroke or heart attack they will have that sweet ride to pick me up in." It will not take long before every city has one of these added to the roster. And then the next step is all future ambulances ordered will be this model...then it will be the only model made....

Years ago, I was driving home from rehearsal and started listening to a late night talk show...syndicated. For the life of me I no longer remember the host's name.

(I may have mentioned this here before)

The host was talking to a fire chief in Cleveland who had been in the midst of a bit of controversy for how he handled a recent fire.

Upon arriving at the scene of a fire in a condo/brownstone type area where the houses shared common walls, he found an antique piano that was worth close to a million dollars in one house adjacent to the fire and in the one on the other side of the fire found a morbidly obese man.

They got a forklift from somewhere nearby and he decided to use the forklift to help the old lady get her piano out of harm's way. He was the son of an opera singer and a grandson two symphony musicians and he immediately recognized the old piano and realized that it needed to be saved.

Meanwhile, the "fat man," as the chief referred to the guy during the entire interview, was given some oxygen to breathe while his second in charge and other firemen worked on getting him out.

The realized that the guy was so fat and the wall so shabby and weakened by the fire next door, that he could literally roll through the way. So they instructed the bed ridden fat guy to begin rocking back and forth to build momentum until he rolled himself off the bed and out through the wall...like the kool-aid man or something.

They immediately tended to him and I guess, after the piano was unloaded from the forklift, used it to get the fat man up and to a hospital or whatever.

Now the chief kept saying that it didn't make sense to spend the time using the forklift to get the fat guy out because they would have had to destroy the wall ANYWAY and that he did his job just fine. The fire was put out, minimal damage was done to the units, the piano was "back where it belonged making music" and the "fat man is back home doing what he was doing before the fire...wheezing."

    (Seriously...that's a quote.)

The host was flabbergasted and began talking about the mayor and police and investigation and what not.

The chief goes off on how he'd been in his position so long that he didn't care what the mayor or police or anyone else had to say. He ran that town and he wasn't going to take shit from anyone.

The host took a call and it ended up being from a volunteer firefighter who lit into the chief for being unprofessional and putting the piano before life blah blah blah.

When the caller stopped talking, the chief says "so you're a volunteer fireman huh?"

The caller says "yes I am."

The fireman says "well, I wanna thank you because you're the boys that get me coffee while we fight fires."

I honestly had to pull over to the side of the road, seriously, because I couldn't control the car. That's how bad I was laughing.

This fatty wagon thing reminds me of that story.
    Stay out of it, dude.

    I am Van Halen.
