Default New Edition of Huckleberry Finn edits out the "N" word

Seriously? This is the 150 anniversary of the death of Mark Twain, and the first volume of his autobiography has just been published. Now a new edition, no doubt to mark the anniversary, is being issued and they are taking the opportunity to "update" the work and make it more politically correct.

What better way to honor a man's contribution to literature and society than to hack away at it and make it politically correct....Hey, Huckleberry Finn wasn't "politically correct" when it was published...that's one of the things that made it so powerful!

New Edition Of 'Huckleberry Finn' Will Eliminate Offensive Words

    January 4, 2011

    by MARK MEMMOTT

Saying they want to publish a version that won't be banned from some schools because of its language, two scholars are editing Mark Twain's classic Adventures of Huckleberry Finn to eliminate uses of the "N" word and replace it with "slave," Publishers Weekly writes.

The edition, from NewSouth Books, will also shorten an offensive reference to Native Americans.

As PW says, "for decades, [Huckleberry Finn] has been disappearing from grade school curricula across the country, relegated to optional reading lists, or banned outright, appearing again and again on lists of the nation's most challenged books, and all for its repeated use of a single, singularly offensive word."

One of the scholars, Alan Gribben of Auburn University, tells PW that "this is not an effort to render Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn colorblind. ... Race matters in these books. It's a matter of how you express that in the 21st century." (The edited Huck Finn will be included in a volume with Tom Sawyer.)

News of the new edition of Huck Finn has sparked quite a bit of comment on Twitter, where "Huckleberry Finn" is a trending topic as this moment. So far, the consensus of the crowd seems to be that it's not a good idea. One interesting comment from that thread:

"Learning the 'N' word from Huckleberry Finn taught me not to use it bc it was improper, so.. why the change?"

The new edition, PW says, is due to be published by February. Huckleberry Finn was first published in 1884.

She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.

As for the matter of how to express it in the 21st century, listen to just about any rap album, or tune in to any episode of The Boondocks... there it is. Meanwhile, erase the word from classic literature so there is no understanding of where the word came from and why it is unacceptable. Smooth move.

the word, in and of itself is not unacceptable...though the very fact that people quiver at its use and what that might mean for their reputation, would certainly have us believe otherwise. hell, we can't even type it on this site or most others.

Context is everything. Within the context of Huckleberry Finn, there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with the word...if it makes you uncomfortable to read it, GOOD. That's what good literature should be doing. Now, go deal with your discomfort, expand your mind and become a better fucking person.

    wussies.
    Stay out of it, dude.

I don't see what the big deal us about the n word. It's representative of the time when the book takes place. If people don't like it, fuck em. Should I not watch the Jeffersons because George says "cracker" all the time? Fuck all this PC bullshit.

Taranteno should have done the editing...he'd have at least doubled the use of the dreaded "N" word, this is proof that we should all just become vegan lesbians who wear nothing but ethical peace kaftans and drink nettle tea from sustainable fields!

The Wife and I were out shopping in one of those suburban tan strip centers that have Old Navy, DSW, Petsmart, Best Buy, and Pier Ones...well, this one in particular tries to be much more schnazzy by having a bunch of Roman and Greek inspired architecture and they feature some really large and really quite well done replicas of statues and sculptures made by Michaelangelo and Raphael.

Originally the developer had completely accurate replicas...dongs exposed and everything but the suburban losers who live in the area and were going to this place went APESHIT about how they were being exposed to filth and porn and obscenity and how their precious fucking children were being subjected to the sight of marble dicks.

So...the developer and architect went back and cut off all the penises and made the statues eunuchs.

    Fuckin' suburbs.

At least they haven't done Hemingway yet.

I love the "Number of years enlightened person and the large body of water"

Catchy title, in the sense that I find it mentally stimulating to view in a light based cornea accepting, with frontal lobe fascination, ability to comprehend, without denegrating those that are especially IQ challenged or less able to observe, and without gloating about the fact that I have opposable thumbs to turn the leaves that constitute the many leaves that many (but not all) have, by council, decided to etc etc ...........

    Yep. People used to say N....I ... G ... G... E .... R...

Not a great word. But they said it. I would not use it in conversation but just because it has become offensive (and I find it so) ......Do we change history because it is distasteful?

We learn from history. By erasing it, we have nothing to learn from.

    A dangerous precedent.

the more i have thought about this, the more annoyed i have become. How many more times are we going to be told what we can or cannot see, read or do by left wing vegetarians with nothing else better to do than tell anyone who owns a penis or eats meat that they are addicted to violence and killing baby Polar Bears?
Where will it all stop? Is the bible going to be re-wriiten so it doesn't offend Muslims, will the ancient history of Rome be altered so no actual Christians were harmed, instead they were given tea and cookies, or how about WWII, are we going to be told that we can no longer speak of the horrors of the holocaust, just incase a Rabbi does't like to hear the name 'Hitler' or 'Goebles'?
What the peope who are editing these books are doing, is takng away a basic freedom that every man woman and child i the civilised world should hold dear, but which so many don't, that right is our freedom of speach and expression and to be able to read the bloody classics if we want.
The way things are going, we will all be working on Communistical farms in the next 20yrs, giving our grain to the mighty vegan leader and al because we don't want to offend a man in a hemp shirt or an explosive Muslim!...the Berlin wall never came down, it just switched sides!

This issue goes beyond censorship, which I am very much against.

The N word is as offensive a word as it gets, there's no denying that. Lots of history, bad history, wrapped up in that one word. That's exactly why it should remain in the novel. There are lots of discussions we need to be having with our kids about that word, the context in which it is used in that novel, the time period, the history and so on. These are important discussions we need to be having with young people today. Simply removing it from the book does a great injustice to all of our students. That word continues to be used by black culture and by racists alike, though with very different intentions and purposes. We simply cannot stick our heads in the sand and pretend it never happened, that it was never written or used by Twain and the people of his time, or the people of our time.

I am a high school English teacher and I can't tell you how mad I get at these types of decisions. I study A Clockwork Orange with my grade 12 English class, and I'm waiting for the day a parent complains about the content. I'm sure it's going to happen at some point. Do we really want to educate our children by always being PC and pretending that certain beliefs, ideas, or words do not exist? I could go on here for quite a bit because my mind is racing the more I type, but I think you get my point, so I'll stop here.
