    Default R.I.P. Pete Postlethwaite

Oscar-nominated actor Pete Postlethwaite dies aged 64

Pete Postlethwaite, once described by Steven Spielberg as "probably the best actor in the world", has died from cancer. He was 65.

His memorable roles included a bandleader in Brassed Off, the priest in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet and the mysterious Kobayashi in The Usual Suspects. His performance as Giuseppe Conlon in In The Name of the Father, a powerful drama about the Guildford Four, earned him an Oscar nomination.

Despite being one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood, he preferred to live quietly with his wife and two children in Shropshire, where he died on Sunday in a local hospital. Few outside his close circle of family and friends knew of his illness and he continued to work throughout his treatment.

He recently finished shooting his last film, Killing Bono, which is due for release in April.

Nick Hamm, the film's director and a friend for 30 years, said: "I wrote to Pete the year before last about the movie and he told me he had cancer. He was very ill but he wanted more than anything to work.

"There was a small role that we worked up for him as a landlord, and we had to film it in a very specific manner because Pete could only work a certain number of hours a day. He was undergoing chemotherapy and I said, 'We don't need to do this', but he wanted to do it. It kept him going, made him focus on something other than his illness.

"It was an incredibly emotional time. It was very difficult to see his performance without tears in our eyes. The movie turned out great for him. But we had to keep this all pretty private because he didn't want his illness to be public knowledge. He was a man who wanted no fuss, even at the end."

Postlethwaite initially planned to be a priest and had a stint as a teacher before becoming an actor. He joined Liverpool's Everyman Theatre, where contemporaries included Julie Walters, Alan Bleasdale and Bill Nighy.

Nighy paid tribute to "a rare and remarkable man". Walters, who had a five-year relationship with Postlethwaite in the 1970s, said: "He was quite simply the most exciting, exhilarating actor of his generation. He invented 'edgy'. Spielberg was right when he said he was the best actor in the world."

Spielberg worked with Postlethwaite on Jurassic Park: The Lost World and Amistad. The actor was typically self-deprecating when told of the director's words, saying: "What he actually said was that Pete thinks he's the best actor in the world."

He was famously uninterested in money, turning down a £10m offer to star in the blockbuster Gone In 60 Seconds. Yet Hollywood directors beat a path to his door and last year he appeared in the box office hit Inception. He was also an accomplished stage actor, working with the Royal Shakespeare Company and in 2008 achieving his long-held ambition in to play King Lear.

Postlethwaite survived an earlier brush with testicular cancer in 1988 and was sanguine about the possibility of dying. "I think your life runs its course and that's it. The world is not ours - it's just on loan."

John Prescott, the former Labour deputy leader, also paid tribute to the actor, saying that Postlethwaite's roles in Brassed Off, about a Yorkshire pit closure, and the environmental film Age of Stupid "had a real effect on me and our Government".

I'm glad Söze didn't get to him. R.I.P., Mr. Postlethwaite. Thanks for all of the great roles.

Enjoyed his work immensely in "In The Name of the Father", "Usual Suspects" and he was the only bearable thing about Jurassic 2. Rest in Peace.

I haven't watched the Usual Suspects since it came out in the theatre, I think I will que that up on Netflix in honor of Mr. Postlethwaite.

And yes, he was the only bearable thing in JP2, totally concur.

One of my favourite roles he played was of the psychotic Obadiah Hakeswell in the mini series Sharpe with Sean Bean. He was awesomely vile. Great character actor.
