    Default Flying with a guitar

I recently got a new Wolfgang Special, and I'm taking it back with me when I head back to school next on Southwest airlines. I usually pack guitars in a gig bag when I carry em on board, and I noticed that the flight case is only a little longer than the gig bag. Is it possible to just carry it on with me in the Case? I'm pretty sure it will fit in the over head bin.

You have no way of knowing until you speak with the airline specifically. I typically check my guitar if it's in a hard case; but I also usually travel with a "replaceable" guitar. Call the airline and find out what their policy is ahead of time.

Ive flown with many guitars in gig bags and they always fit above.
My EBMM in the gig bag fit in the overhead - that was one of EVH's selling points in 1991 and it's true.

In 2009 i flew to Texas for SXSW with a les paul in a flight case and checked it right when i walked on the plane.
The gave it back to me right after we landed.

Make sure you leave your wire cutters at home.
Went through LAX with a special pair of wire cutters that also had a small blade in my case and they would have called the Police but the screener was a musician too so he let me go.

But i did have to toss em.
Funny that another airport i went through earlier that week didn't bother.

you may also want to try and store it in the forward storage, where people hang coats. You CAN do that, you just have to ask. One things for sure, be 100% positive as to the policy. The one thing you DON'T want to happen is to get to the airport in a gig bag and find they force you to check it. Then you are stuck with losing a guitar or losing a ticket.

i have done that several times with Strats in hardcases, although i always fly Virgin (no jokes please) so i know i'm ok to do it, always check with your airline first.
