Default 'Freedom Tower' Reaches Halfway Point - NYC

Construction of the "Freedom Tower," or 1 World Trade Center as it is now called, has reached the 52nd of 104 planned floors.
The building, currently standing more than 600 feet above ground, is the focal point of rebuilding at the site of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks that destroyed the WTC's Twin Towers. When completed, the new building will be topped by an antenna that will make it the tallest building in New York City at 1,776 feet.

I think this is fantastic! The architecture is really cool...

I was in NYC 2 weekends ago and it was really great to see the progress. For the longest time they were still working below ground level and progress looked minimal...it is going to be a tremendous addition to the skyline of the city.

That is really cool. Definitely looks futuristic.

That said. How would you feel if your company was moving to say the 90th floor once it opens? Just saying.

You know, that's a pretty fair question. I can't say I'd be all warm and fuzzy about it. But, the changes of it happening again are minimal. Not impossible but minimal.

Not to be grim, but don't be surprised if you read a story later about how those near the top are keeping base jumping parachutes in their office. I know I would.

That being said, it looks like a beautiful piece of architecture. Still would have preferred this, though:

Apologies if that image is too big.

I've never been to NYC and have wanted to go forever. As a matter of fact, I was supposed to be there on 9/11 but my parents cancelled the trip a few weeks prior on account of they didn't want me to miss school.

I really want to go soon though and see the WTC site to take it all in.

You'll want to mentally prepare yourself to enter that area.

I've been there at two dramatically different points in history. The first was days after Christmas, 1985. Was a different world then, and the towers stood proudly and mightily over a frozen New York. I stood at the topmost observation deck of one of them with my school friends and was silenced by the sight of not just NYC out those windows. I felt like one could see the world from that height.

The second time - late 2006, chronicled below......

After a few minutes, she began to lead us to the southwestern edge of NYC. We had only traversed a few mere blocks before we came upon an area that was utterly unrecognizable to me twenty years later.
We were at the former site of the Twin Towers. As we crossed the street to stand in its boundaries, I felt a cold streak in me. It was like having ice poured down my throat. I remembered being inside the visitor center when I was fifteen, and could recall how massive the interior of the building was. I remember the sheer expanse of the observation deck as me and my friends shot from one window to another, drinking in every view like it were life-giving water. This was no moon, it was a space station.

And here I now stood, and it was gone. All of it. Taken from us by murderers. The fanatical cold-blooded motherfuckers just snuffed out these innocent people, punched holes into families.

“sunday morning, nine a.m. – I saw fire in the sky…..”

There is now heavy grated fencing that encircles the site, and construction trailers and trucks of all sizes parked within. A giant access ramp leads up to the street level from the center of it all. I’ll have to simply describe to you what is there because it simply seemed wrong just to whip out my phone-cam and start snapping away.

No, as far as I was concerned, I was standing in a graveyard – and it was hard to move, but eventually I did. “P” and I descended to a lower level, where the walls were tiled with pictures and finger paintings. These were the sentiments immortalized here of the children of the victims of the 9/11 attack. I’ve felt pain in the heart before, but very few things have simply dived into my chest and ripped me out from within like what I saw on these walls.

    “I miss my daddy….”

    “this is for mommy….”

I wondered at this moment why I had come here. I knew I would feel this overwhelming sense of anguish. I knew I would feel heartbreak like no one could ever tell me. And here I was. I ascended the stairs with “P” and we joined a throng of about 200 people reading the names of heroes who had given their lives to charge into the buildings on that terrible day. This sign apparently had been added recently, because “P” was reacting to it with a tidal wave of tears.

The emotions overtook me as well, as I reached forth to grip the cold metal fence that now stood where nothing should be except two tall, graceful, beautiful buildings. I looked up to see if I could guess where the spot was that stood back in 1985 when I looked down on the city and saw the entire world instead. I realized that simply wasn’t looking high enough every time. It was then that I saw a bird gliding impossibly high over the sight. I don’t know what kind it was, but I like to think it was an eagle.

“Take me away. Come on and fly me away. Take me up so high, where eagles fly…”

“P” was still weeping, and I pulled her close to me and kissed her forehead. I still don’t know if either of us felt anything from this brief and rare exchange of affection, but I think the power of just being in that place overrode everything else. For second, I forgot I was even in New York.
