    Early Brown Sound Comments

Gents, I was messing around with my Pod X3 trying to get an early brown sound tone, and wanted some comments to see how close you think it is. I can't tell anymore, I've been messing with it for a while now and it all sounds the same when I tweak it. Feel free to be brutal about it, I want to try to get it closer. Only so much you can do with the Pod I know, but I would like to dial in a nice early EVH tone.

Yes the playing sucks, don't mind that. Unfortunately that's normal.

Is your recording input distorting a lot or is that the pod? Under the crackling, it actually sounds like you've got the EQ real close, which is the hard part.

I think I have the level too high yes on the recording. I didn't realize that until after.

Edit: Actually I just looked and no it's not oveloaded, that's just how the Pod sounds the way I have it I guess.

Actually I might just have the tone volume up too high too.

Just dial it back a little somewhere in the chain and get rid of the crackling, and I think you're getting really close.

Yeah I think it's the tone volume, let me mess with it some more after I eat. I have a compressor on too, might be part of it.

LOL dude I'm playing in my house, I can't be blasting an amp in here with my family. And I don't have anywhere near that kind of money to spend on that amp.

Don't laugh!!! I've got a 7-month old boy now, and I got him a set of ear-muffs, so he just smiles and bops away in his jolly-jumper!

No I play out, but I use my Pod for the house, not my amp.

Hey! That sounds bang on for EQ for the mids and lows, and the crackles' gone. Was it the tone you control? My only criticism is it needs a little more clarity on the top end. I've never used a Pod so I don't know if that's possible. What kind of guitar you using on this?

Funny - I was just listening to this song (the orginal VH demo) on the way into the office this morning. Sounds pretty close Brett, just listening to this on my office computer though. Sounds like you need a little more middle and you got it.

I actually found a backing track of the real Jamie's Cryin' without Ed's guitar so I put mine on it, then played the real one for comparison. My tone is totally thin and is missing that top end whine that Ed has...also doesn't seem near as warm, or even that close, I was kind bummed. When I get home tonight I'll post an example of the two, maybe you guys have some idea what to do. I just don't know. There is only so much you can do with the Pod I guess. But I should be to able to get it better I would think.

Guitarwise really can't get more dead on, I'm using my Rasta VH guitar with a Frankenstein pickup.

This guy made a real nice VH tone using Guitar Rig...wish I could get the freaking Pod to do this.
