Default What is the best guitar for the $

New or used, what do you think (that's out there right now) the best guitar for the $?

I saw a couple of used EVH Wolfgang Standards (the latest edition) on GC online that are under $2000. That seems like a pretty good price to me, but you might disagree.

imo, nothing beats a good Strat..Mexican or U.S.A. Simple guitar, comfortable and easy to play, easy to modify and the choice is huge.

Mexican strats are a pretty good guitar for the price, I agree.

They're fantastic...a bit hard to find, only one shop in Houston sells them, but really well made guitars.

They make their own pickups and, from what I understand, they way they route the guitars is different than normal guitars. Not being a luthier, I know zero about that sort of thing but apparently the routing method they use provides for better overall resonance.

Ian Moore has been playing a Buckshot for a while now with great results. I'm trying to decide which one I want...I'm leaning towards the Buckshot myself.

Never played one but heard they're great.

Also have to put in a word for the Carvin stuff here. AWESOME quality for the money and it's basically all a custom deal - guitar of your dreams for cheaper than you can buy off the rack.

yep...Carvin's build quality is second to none and with their custom shop you can build just about anything.

You really CAN'T go wrong with a good strat or tele. Still my favourites!

If they are in good shape then that's a good price, you probably won't find them cheaper than that anywhere.

Mexican strats are very hit and miss. Some are really well put together and play nicely. Others I've tried were rather poor...fret edges, playability, overall fit and finish etc. You really need to have the guitar in your hands and play it before buying.

I think Carvin is a terrific value also, can't go wrong with them really and they have a return policy.

I'd have to say the Peavey Wolfgang Special. They're great guitars, and they don't go for much.

Depending on what you're after and truly bang for buck. This includes current offshore models:

    Non trem "traditional" style guitars:
    Gibson's Faded Series

PRS SE Series (Check out their new Korina line. I tried one last weekend and they sound fantastic!)

Tokai "Love Rock" Les Pauls clones. They can be had on CL, or Ebay from $500 to $800 and are such exact copies right down to the font on the headstock, they might as well be a real Gibson.

    Fender HWY 1 Telecaster
    ************************************************** ********
Trem Guitars (either Floyd equiped of vintage style in no particular order)
Fender: Strat (including HWY 1 and Mexican)

EBMM: Axis No offence against the Wolfgang, but for bang for buck on the top end, you can't go wrong.

Kramer. Not the new ones, but the vintage models. As of late there seems to be a lot more of the sought after models out there these days for a lot less, probably the result of the economy, and people having to part with stuff, so keep your eyes peeled on C.L. in particular.

    Just a few ideas.

Another vote for EBMM. I honestly don't think you can buy a better guitar.

imo, "bang for the buck" nod HAS to go to a comfortably used EBMM Axis. For right around $1k, you get pretty much the EXACT guitar as EB's crowning achievement (outside of the BFR runs). With the EVH EB's running north of $2500 these days, that's basically 60% off for a guitar without an autographed headstock.

I'll take that deal any day of the week...

Well as someone who played Strats and Teles only for 20 years before buying another brand Fenders are a great bang for the buck right now and I mean US Sigs and Deluxes. Ever since their big price hike that flopped the guitars are actually lower now than before the hike. You can grab a Clapton Strat with TBX and Mid Boost or a Beck Strat with Hot Noiseless pups, locking Tuners and LSR Nut for $1,599 new or $1,100 mint on the bay, same for a Deluxe.

But the last 5 years I have been an EBMM nut and you just cant beat the overall quality, and my last 8 guitars have all been Balls. The only model I cant gel with is the JP as the fucking neck is just to thin for me, how I wish they had a CS as I would slap a different neck on in a second. If you like Fenders it is a real smooth transition to go right into the Ball line, I also think they have the best line of models made in the last 20 years. I always thought the AL was a weird looking duck until they put it out in a HH configuration with rose wood neck and 60s retro finishes and now as weird as it seems I think they look wicked as well as sounding great with that mahogany body giving it a dark edge. You also cant beat the bang for the buck of a Peavey Wolfgang.
