Default Time's 'Person of Year': Mark Zuckerberg

NEW YORK — Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been named Time magazine's "Person of the Year" for 2010.

At 26, Zuckerberg has put himself on the map not only as one of the world's youngest billionaires, but also as a prominent newcomer to the world of philanthropy.

Earlier this year, he pledged $100 million over five years to the Newark, N.J. school system. Now, he's in the company of media titans Carl Icahn, 74, Barry Diller, 68, and others who have joined Giving Pledge, an effort led by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and investor Warren Buffett to commit the country's wealthiest people to step up their charitable donations.

Zuckerberg owns about a quarter of Facebook's shares.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke received the honor last year. The 2008 winner was then-President-elect Barack Obama. The 2007 winner was Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

Other previous winners have included Bono, President George W. Bush, and Amazon.com CEO and founder Jeff Bezos.

Time's "Person of the Year" is the person or thing that has most influenced the culture and the news during the past year for good or for ill.

I am all for everyone making as much money as they can, but I think it says something about our society when a person can invent something as UNIMPORTANT as Facebook, and become a billionaire off of it.

If anything, Facebook is a detriment to our society, as some people spend their entire day on the fucking site instead of actually, oh, I don't know, working.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

As opposed to a site dedicated to a defunct band?

Q: who was the biggest douche that you have worked with?

A: Eddie Van Halen hands down he threatened all the stage hands that if we wernt all pushed to the side when he got off stage that he would "bash our faces in"

Now the new David-Lee-Roth-Van Halen album, “Tokyo Dome In Concert,” is available for purchase, and it’s super, super, super, super, super, super, crazy bad. - Doug Elfman

My heart was going for Assange, but after reading that facebook has one-twelfth of the planet subscribed, I guess it is a no brainer.

Good man. Bad man. Not the point of the accolade.

This guy is almost as important as cricket.

I still can't believe it wasn't Obama. I guess he'll have to settle for a Grammy, An Emmy an MTV Movie and Music Award, a Tony and I have no doubt he'll be inducted into the rock n roll hall of fame.

Anyone catch Phil Hendrie the other night? Steve Bosell was the "guest" and was so upset about Zuckerberg being made POY that he had decided to sue Time magazine for emotional damages. His motivation was that Zuckerberg, being a billionaire and now getting even more exposure with Time, had made it impossible for regular guys like Steve to be successful with women. No matter what Steve did, it would be Zuckerberg in the VIP room. Poor Steve was on the verge of tears on several occasions. Classic.
