Default played a new wolfgang special today...

Or at least I tried to at a guitar center in phoenix, but every fret edge on the neck felt like a razor blade. Nice quality control fender.

To be fair, the lack of quality control from the boys at Fender has little to do with it. Rather, it's that dry, Arizona desert air that isn't exactly a friend to unfinished necks. The same thing happens to my unfinished necks here in New York once the dry winter air arrives... it's a simple fact of nature- wood inevitably contracts when humidity decreases and the frets will stick out as a result.
I'm sure that guitar left Japan perfectly set-up.

No, it was as if the put the frets in and didn't file the edges. It's dry here, but not that dry. I have a peavey wolfgang and an axis with unfinished necks and never had a problem. This was just bad quality contro l on this guitar. That's all.

Nah,... IMO, there's a little more to it than that, but, hey, if you really want to believe that guitar left a Japanese assembly line without the frets being filed, what can I say? Fact is, I just filed the fret ends on four of my unfinished necks this week alone.

I don't see why it couldn't have been a bad fret job jimi, I've played $4,000 Les Pauls that have had sharp frets. A Japanese Wolfgang I wouldn't think is immune to that. Certainly can't say it's dry or humid in Southern Cal, as it rarely is either.

I played one of the Standards at a Guitar Center two weeks ago when I was there gettings strings. And I didn't want to say anything, because I know how defensive people can get over these things. I mean for $3,000, I thought my Peavey Standard I paid $900 for 12 years ago played just as well, and for me it didn't feel as comfortable either. I don't know, it didn't play like I thought a $3,000 guitar should is what I took from it. I have no idea about the Special of course.

Brett, we're talking about the fret ends actually protruding from the edge of the fretboard... here's a Stew Mac Newsletter that illustrates the problem and explains the cause...

I played one at GC in Atlanta and I thought it was pretty bad ass. Especially for the money. I also know that most guitar manufacturers fuck up on quality control and some leave the factory with defects. I played a custom shop LP that was so screwed up it had to be sent back to Gibson. But for the money the special is pretty damn hard to beat.

My Wolfgang special is perfect. No problems with the frets (even with the dry cold weather here in Dallas at this time), and the tone is fantastic. The more I play it the better it sounds.

The only complaint I have with the guitar is where the switch is located on the body. It gets in the way from time to time.

Look Jimi I'm telling you, (not to be a dick or anything) but, i've played a lot of guitars in my life, and never felt a neck as bad as this. This guitar had something seriously wrong with the frets, that's all. I just found it hard to believe, especially because Fender's corporate office is about 20 minutes from this guitar center. I know they don't build and ship right from the office but, I just thought it was odd. It was a bad fret job, that's all.

Just curious... did you let an associate at Guitar Center know about the frets? Shouldn't GC be somewhat responsible for allowing a defective guitar to be displayed/played? After all, it's their sale…right? That would be comparative to a Ford dealership selling a truck with the bed being shifted two inches to the driver’s side. Wait...they do that. Sorry…bad example. -HA!

To be fair, I've seen this kind of thing more and more over the past number of years regardless of manufacturer. Especially with frets. I understand where Jimi is coming from though. Especially on the current trend of unfinished or thin skinned necks. You'd swear the frets were not filed correctly on their ends, but it is just contraction of the wood, but if the ends are as sharp as you say, it does sound like they were cut without finishing. Pretty big step to miss. Jimi's absolutely correct though. On overseas instruments the contraction and expansion can be very dramatic. I have a couple Korean made guitars a guy bought here at the studio that were purchased recently online and the necks were both so bowed, and needed heavy trussrod adjustments. One done, they play fine, so the necks were not twisted or poorly made in Asia. Just bowed from heavy climactic differences.

I played the special and the standard back to back a couple weeks ago and I was AMAZED at how much better the standard was.

I wasn't impressed at all with the special.
