Default Does anyone use a noise gate?

I'm looking to get a noise gate specifically a MXR M-135 smart gate. Does anyone have any experience with one? Do they work or affect any aspect of playability?

Well I use the Boss NS-2 and I love it. Yes it works, and I don't notice much of any loss of signal. My singer always says he won't use one, it sucks his tone. But I haven't noticed that at all. Don't know much about the MXR one.

I've used the same one as Brett but I haven't had the same luck, at least through an effects loop. I used to try to run it in my 5150 effects loop, but it just doesn't seem to work. I've maxed the sucker and I still get so much hiss and I get tons of bleed. In my 5150 now, I use an old Rocktron Hush II and that seems to work better. Could be just the tubes I use. Sleeper told me about switching at least one of the preamp tubes to a different value. One with a "Y" in the code but I have not tried it yet. His, which I have now is quieter than mine. We got them around the same time when they first came out, but mine always seemed to have a lot more hiss. manufacturing thing, or an adjustment. Just don't know. For non effects loop amps, I just mic up and use a DBX smart gate in my signal to the board.

The hiss level on a 5150 or 5150II is directly linked to your preamp tubes. It's so sensitive that you could get 2 identical same brand tubes, and using one in one spot and one in another could cause way more or less hiss.

All I know is that any time I've played into a rig with a gate on it, I always thought it 'felt' weird, and I ended up turing it off.

I use an MXR Smart Gate with my 5150 combo...as anyone who uses these amps knows, as soon as you turn the Lead channel gain up past 1/2, it tends to get very hissy and noisy...I find that the gate does a good job of controlling it, and I don't notice that it affects the tone or playability at all..hope this helps..

I have the Boss TU-2 tuner in my pedalboard. In between songs (either at a show or in rehearsal) I step on it. Using the regular output it cuts off signal when engaged. That's all I need for a noise gate.

I use a NS2 with my 5150 and it definitely cuts down the chip frying pan sound.

any of the smart gates from the original rockman to the pro work great. even the pedal is pretty good. there is also a hard to find piece from rocktron called a guitar silencer. they only made them for a few years and they were awesome. bob bradshaw turned me onto it.

definitely. its the best one out there now. i actually loved the original rockman smart gate. EVH used one from 91'-98'. the rocktron guitar silencer was very much like the pro only better. it was the best unit they made and they dropped it after like a year and a half. impossible to find now.

In my guitar rig I use the Smart Gate, in my Bass rig I use the BOSS. Both work great, also have tried the decimator and it also works well. In addition I have a Rocktron Hush that I run in the loop depending on the set up I use. All in all it boils down to personal preference, they all get the job done, just depends on how much you want to spend.

Yeah and Ed's tone has sucked balls since then too, so that maybe that's not a ringing endorsement.
