I would consider myself somewhere between agnostic and atheist. I don't presume to know for sure that there isn't a God, nor do I presume to know for sure that there is.

I do believe that there are many, many people that feel the same way, or may even lean more towards atheism, yet are afraid to admit it because of what others will think of them. I also know that these are the type of people that American Atheists are trying to reach.

But doesn't that make them more like the religions they don't like?

I feel, along with friends that feel the same way, no need to congregate to discuss our feelings, nor do we have any urge to try to recruit or coax others into our traditions/beliefs--both hallmarks of many believers. If you believe, great. If you don't, hey, I'm pretty much with ya. In fact, the people that try to engage me when I answer truthfully are believers. So why are these guys trying to do this?

To somewhat paraphrase Adam Carolla (an atheist), isn't part of being an atheist not giving a shit?

I agree. I was brought up a believer, and now I can safely admit that I don't have a f'ing clue either way. Anyone who says they know for sure is kidding themselves.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Absolutely.

My GF saw this news story and, knowing full well what I am, asking me if I condoned the sign.

"No." I answered. She seemed pretty surprised by this, so I explained it to her.

This organization, no matter their beliefs or lack of, does not speak for me. As an athiest, I truly don't give a shit - even about other athiests. I don't seek them out, go to their websites or message boards. What would be the point?

    "I don't believe in god."
    "Me neither."

    "Cool. Nice meeting you."

Further, another thing about what being an athiest means to me is not getting in other people's faces. This sign gets in other people's faces. It's (pardon the pun) preachy. It seems designed to stir the shit.

I don't want to stir the shit. That's not what athiesm means to me. I don't want to convert or convince anyone. That's not my job. It shouldn't be the job of any athiest.

It simply means that you, personally, don't beleive in gods or demons or fairies or easter bunnies or women that always say what's on their mind. That's something you keep to yourself, unless someone comes out and asks you.

The sign is pretty stupid. And I kinda wish it would get hit by a lightning bolt just for the WTF factor.

I agree with you. If you're an athiest, why care or feel the need to post a sign like this to discount a persons faith? What's the point? To convert believers into non believers? In that context, it almost seems like trying to get people to join an organised group of a sort....like a religion. So what's the difference? I could care less either way what someone believes. I have friends from both sides. It doesn't come up, but it seems lately there is a real heavy duty movement or opinion against those of faith on radio talk shows, other forums with people slamming christians, calling them weak and feebleminded with little or no provocation. Real venomous stuff, and that does bother me. as long as a person of faith isn't in my face trying to dictate the way I should live, you're cool with me. In the same vain, going out of your way to tell people of faith that their belief is nothing more than myth in a blatant public manor is equally as wrong. People do and believe what get's them by in life.
Live and let live. I don't care if you're a transexual Satan worshiper. Keep that freaky shit to yourself and we cool!

I am a mixture between a crisis-Christian and an agnostic. Problem I have is that I have seen enough supernatural shit in my life to make me believe that something is out there that can't be explained by science.

Anyway the only issue I have with this billboard is that they are belittling a bunch of people who celebrate this time of year. Granted the spirit of Christmas has been loss due to the commercialism of it but what does it hurt of a religion to celebrate the birth of its God? It's not like human sacrifices are occurring.
