I bought one from Mean Street Guitars this year and was absolutely thrilled with it! It looks fantastic and sounds great. Communication and service was also excellent.

When I first read the title of this thread I thought Eddie had release a 5150 scent of Axe for the holidays. Not to derail the subject but I totally thought I would see a red and white striped can of Axe posted. Haha. .....must be the holiday madness getting to me.

In the spirit of this forum.... the best builder is "You". In my opinion, the best guitar that I own is the one that I built myself. Mind you I am not a skilled builder or anything, so I had to buy the neck and body, but everything else is all blood, sweat, and yes even tears. If you do it yourself, I am sure you will find many hours, days, weeks, months and years of enjoyment. I especially like looking at one of mine and go, "Man, I wish I would have done this or that, I will definitely do it for the next one..."

I agree, and the 5150 is pretty easy to do yourself as well. It's one of the easier paint jobs, and the guitar itself is easy to get, a lot of guys making them right to spec with Ed's. I say do it yourself.

Musikraft (in New Jersey) do a great 5150 kit. It comes with everything you need bar the pickup, strings and paint. Its a great price, too.

As Brett said, it's not too difficult to paint up yourself. There are plenty of guides and templates of it here and at a few other VH/guitar building websites.

I just finished painting one myself. It turned out alright...

I shaped the headstock on mine. I bought a paddle headstock from AllParts and shaped it with a saw. It was great, quite fun to do! As for builders, I chose KnE at the time, because of their prices.

    I wanna build one.
That's always been my favorite Eddie axe.

    I have a 5150 made by GMW.

You can see it in this video -

I got mine used and heard that GMW won't make them anymore.

I've wanted to make a bass with Ed's bumblebee design, but I just have never gotten started on it.

To be honest, the painting and woodworking I have full confidence in doing, but the electronics part of it to me is a little daunting.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Time is my biggest obstacle. I will need someone to build and paint as I just don't have the time. Always on the run ..... my son plays 3 sports

Wiring one pickup to a pot and a jack? Dude you can handle that.

Does KNE or Musikraft make a 22 fret '5150' neck like Eddies' without a tongue extension? It's an often overlooked detail. His has 22 fret's but no extension. I'm not sure where they compensated for this though, the neck pocket or moving the Floyd back. it's a small detail, and most don't notice it. but with the truss adjustment down at the pocket where most builder tend to stick to with a replica, it makes it a bit easier to access the screw or nut. It's just a cool detail. I can't remember if Kramer made their necks for mass production like this. Every Kramer I owned had the typical extension, and I'd often have to looses or take the neck off to get at the adjustment properly. Some of the tongues had a relief in them to make it easier, but many didn't. I think this came from the fact that Kramer outsourced their neck production to ESP when they couldn't keep up with demand.
