If there was a reasonable way to track down the person I have no doubt I would. Maybe I'm naive but I believe most people would.

Did when anyone else think when they first read of someone found $3300 in cash in a backpack in Arizona that it probably belonged to someone with a drug cartel?

    Of course.

When we were first married, my wife left her purse on top of the beemer with her wallet in it. It had 1600 bucks cash in it and we were on our way to pay the rent. By the time she realized it, only one block later, by the time we got back to where we were parked there was NO SIGN of it anywhere.

I was praying for honor and integrity there, but didn't find it. I could never make somebody else go through that.

When I was about twelve years old, my Little League team was outside of stores soliciting donations from folks. I found a wallet with about $200.00 in it. I took it into the store and gave it to the manager. I was afraid Alan Funt was going to come out from hiding and say..." Smile you little fucking thief, you're on Candid Camera."

I would make every effort to find out who belongs to the backpack. My conscience wouldn't let me do otherwise. Especially with what I preach to my kids about doing the right thing.

Now..if I'm in this guy's exact shoes, I really don't know. Maybe someone will extend a hand to him with a job offer.

Absolutely return it. All I would be able to think about would be someone in a situation like Seen's, that the money is intended for rent or bills, etc and if the person didn't get it back, it would cause a great hardship. I don't want to better my life at the cost of someone else's suffering. Now if I was homeless and my kids needed food, I'll be honest, I don't know what I would do until that moment. I would like to think my morals would be the same but hungry kids would definitely make me think.

if there's identification, i think you owe it to the person to find a way to get it back to them if it's at all possible. I also think it's just as necessary for the person who gets the stuff returned to do something for your trouble.

i've only lost my wallet once and it was in Montreal. Whoever found it brought it to the cops who got hold of my family back home.

Wonderfully honest post. Good point. It's pretty easy to say I'd do the right thing on this one as I personally don't have a need for that scratch. It'd be nice, sure, but I don't need it. Homeless with kids? Hmm...that's a pretty good litmus to ones character there.

That being said, I still think I'd turn it in even in those conditions. I think that's one of the better things about us that we all have. The "human condition" is generally a term used to describe the negative in us. The positive part though, would tell us that no matter how little we have, our honor and integrity regardless of situational circumstance is something we can choose to take to the grave unblemished, and that still matters to a great many. This man included, who I applaud. That needs to be spotlighted on occasion, like this, so we can be reminded of that which is good in us.

BTW, if I were an employer wherever that was. I'd find this guy and make sure he had a spot with me.
