Default Video of Eddie playing the Kramer 5150 after he broke the headstock.

Im sure many of you have seen this footage.
It's raw video of VH playing the opening of the Cabo Wabo in January of 1990.

Most of us nerds know that Eddie broke the 5150's headstock.

In this video you can see the added high E tuner on the headstock.
Fast forward to 3:57 for a good look.

So i guess he broke the headstock sometime in 1989 after the OU812 tour?

And he's also playing the Soldano head. Can you see what the cab is?

I can't get a fix on the cab, but I see an Ampeg Head / cab next to it.
The Soldano is a bit gainy for my taste, but Ed's playing is on the money.
One thing that doesn't get discussed allot is his right hand technique (picking) not tapping.
How the hell does he do it? I have tried ( see at about 3:19 ) and it is super UNCOMFORTABLE. To me, that is as Revolutionary as the tap technique.
    It's really cool.

I read an article in Guitar World recently where Joe Satriani describe Ed as "the best right hand in the business."

I think his rhythmic swing, timing and speed picking make in exceptional.

He holds the pick between his thumb and middle finger, then sometimes with his index finger, then sometimes with all 3.

I've tried holding the pick with my thumb and middle finger, and you know what, it makes a noticeable difference, and I don't know why. Try playing Unchained like you normally would with your thumb and index finger, then play it again holding the pick between your thumb and middle finger...I noticed a huge difference, and it sounded much better holding the pick with my middle finger, but it was super hard and my hand wore out after about a minute. I think it's something I'm going to practice a little bit each day until my hand gets strong enough to do it, it really is a different technique and I think you're right, it's just as new or revolutionary as tapping, and just as difficult to really do well.

I really like his tone with the Soldano and I think he should have gone that route instead of the 5150. His playing here is terrific though, and that solo is just classic EVH, and the outro to that solo is killer.

For me, it's the opposite. I've always held the pick between my middle and thumb... I can play using my index (and I deliberately do so for certain passages), but I feel much more comfortable the other way. It does make a difference in terms of the angle of attack and string muting and there's no doubt that it's an integral part of the EVH sound. In the final analysis, though, it's definitely not the most efficient way to hold a pick!

Yup, I agree, vintage EVH. He even plays a couple runs from the "Beat It" solo at around 2:57.

i was at the cabo opening where that video is from. it was an ampeg 4x12 with celestions in it. funny story. some of their stuff got temporarily hijacked by banditos on the way down thru baja from LA. they had to pay a 'fee' to get it back and some showed up in time for the show and some didn't. the ampeg 4x12's were borrowed.

I'm still trying to understand everyone's fascination with Soldanos. I've had an SLO since I was 17 and my 5150II blows it away.

I hold my pick just like Eddie.
    Thumb and middle finger.
Been doing that since i was 13.
I could never hold a pick the "normal" way.
In 1993 when i got my EVH Ernie Ball guitar i went to GC and plugged into a Soldano stack and it was the best sound ever.
I can't play through 5150's anymore, so sick of that tone.
I have photos of Eddie playing through his "Soda" @ Namm 1991.
I posted the photos here b4 but i'll post em again later.
Just got back from an early morning jam in Oakland and i gotta go eat something.

Ampeg was originally a sponsor at the Cabo Wabo, so it's no surprise they had lots of their stuff there.

I like Eddie's tone through the Soldano. This was very much the era of transformation from the lighter gain Marshall 80s EVH tone to the higher gain Soldano/5150 90s EVH tone. I think he played the Soldano at the suggestion of Andy Johns, so they must have already been working together as of spring 1990 (which makes sense as the F.U.C.K. album took about a year to write and record). And I believe the only track on F.U.C.K. EVH played the Kramer on was "Judgement Day."

when that video was shot the club was not even open yet and there was no equipment there. they were literally setting up the PA 30 min before they played. those cabs came from someone i think in los cabos. they were not working on anything yet and hadn't even played together many months since the OU812 tour ended. that was mentioned that night about how rusty they were. EVH had the Soldano amp, his 5150 Kramer, a Steinberger, and a sunburst strat with a tele neck on it he played finish what you started with in 3 cases that he opened right in front of us and then set up and started fiddling with the amp, PA, etc, before they started. Soldano's were out less than a year at that point and were like a LA pro player underground secret almost. Steve Lukather had one of the first ones and loved it. he got EVH to get one. i met Mike Soldano a couple of months later when he moved his shop to LA. great guy. back then it was just Mike, Bill, and one other guy building the amps as ordered. they started with Andy Johns about 2 months later. if i remember correctly, they switched to the Soldano after trying several times to get the old Marshall going but just could not get it to sound good in the studio. FWIW

I've always played with the pick between my thumb and middle finger, and it had nothing to do with Ed it just came naturally. Never honestly realized he did that too.

I can't get my angle right when I play with my middle finger. I have to use my index finger.
