Default Whats the best version of "Heavy metal", the soundtrack or on "Standing hampton"?

I'm just wondering if anyone has heard, or has the "Heavy metal" soundtrack from 1981. Apparently, "Heavy metal" (Sammys song) is different from "Standing hampton" cause it was produced by Roy Thomas Baker, and not Keith Olsen who produced it on "Standing Hampton". I'm just wondering how big the difference is. Was Bakers version better than Olsens or vica versa? I'm trying to get it on cd.

I prefer the soundtrack version. Sammy's vocals are a little muddier compared to Standing Hampton but the music is rawer and edgy.

    +1.

Never liked 'shoot out the lights.'
Although the words 'turn out the lights' doesn't sound as edgy...the way he sings it definitely does
    .
And yes...the music is WAAAYYYYYy better.
    Much more spontaneous cut.
The other sounds too polished....not as dirty.

Evidently Iím in minority on this one as I like the album version much better. It may be that the album version is the one I know and to which Iíve always listened and whenever I hear the soundtrack version, it sounds strange to me.

Does anyone know the history of the song? Which version was first? Was the song written for the movie or is the title completely coincidental?

It was written for the movie. Sammy said it in a interview from BAM in 1981. The movie/soundtrack came first.

Don't know why, but I just really don't like Sam's pre Van Halen stuff, even his popular songs like this one.

I love Sam's stuff from 5150 through Ten 13, but not much before or after.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

It's obvious Sam was asked to write this song coz Sammy Hagar was never really "metal" in any way, shape or form. However he did a great job talking about it in the song.

If I remember correctly, Black Sabbath's "The Mob Rules" is different on the soundtrack than from the Sabbath album version.

I do agree, but hes mentioned the line "Heavy metal" in a cuppla songs like "Turn up the music" and "Urban guerilla".
When he'd really rock out, i'd call him heavy rock.

You know, I've just realised that I've got the soundtrack version on 12" vinyl and I've never played it, I just spotted it in a store when I was picking up a few records, been in my cupboard ever since!

that's correct, I think the lyrics are a little different.

I like the version from the soundtrack better. I remember an interview I saw with sam in some obscure guitar magazine and he said his solo on this song ( the soundtrack version) was the best one he had ever done up to that point.
